Book Central Works of Philosophy

Download or read book Central Works of Philosophy written by John Shand and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2005 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ranging over 2,500 years of philosophical writing, this five-volume collection of essays is an unrivalled companion to the study and reading of philosophy. Central Works of Philosophy provides both an overview of particular works and clear and authoritative expositions of their central ideas, giving readers the resources and confidence to read the works themselves. These books offer remarkable insights into the ideas out of which our present ways of thinking emerged and without which they cannot fully be understood. VOLUME 3 introduces readers to the age of idealism, from which twentieth-century Western philosophy emerged. The volume begins with Kantbs Critique of Pure Reason, which determined much of the course of nineteenth-century philosophy, and ends with the moral and political philosophy of Stuart Mill, perhaps the only philosopher in this volume to evade Kantbs influence. Also included are works by two post-Kantian idealists, Fichte and Hegel, as well as Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Marx, and Nietzsche. Contributors include Curtis Bowman, Stephen Evans, Michelle Grier, Michael Inwood, Dale Jacquette, Jonathan Riley, Tom Rockmore, and Rex Welshon.

Book excerpt: In 'The World as Will and Idea' by Arthur Schopenhauer, the author presents his philosophical masterpiece in three volumes, exploring the nature of the world as perceived through the lens of individual will and idea. I highly recommend 'The World as Will and Idea' to readers interested in delving into profound philosophical inquiries and exploring the nature of existence. Book Central Works of Philosophy v3

Download or read book Central Works of Philosophy v3 written by John Shand and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central Works of Philosophy is a major multi-volume collection of essays on the core texts of the Western philosophical tradition. From Plato's Republic to the present day, the five volumes range over 2,500 years of philosophical writing covering the best, most representative, and most influential work of some of our greatest philosophers. Each essay has been specially commissioned and provides an overview of the work, clear and authoritative exposition of its central ideas, and an assessment of the work's importance. Together these books provide an unrivaled companion for studying and reading philosophy, one that introduces the reader to the masterpieces of the western philosophical canon. Much of nineteenth-century philosophy may be viewed as either an affirmation or rejection of Kant. This volume therefore begins with Kant's magnum opus, the Critique of Pure Reason. Michelle Grier provides a masterly distillation of this monumental work. Curtis Bowman explores the central text of the first of the great post-Kantian idealists, Fichte who extended Kantian philosophy in a new direction. Hegel, one of Kant's most formidable critics, is given incisive treatment by Michael Inwood in his presentation of the Phenomenology of Spirit. Schopenhauer's World as Will and Representation, which hoped to solve many of the problems that Kant's philosophy left unsolved is explored in Dale Jacquette's chapter. The moral philosophy of John Stuart Mill, perhaps the only philosopher in this volume to circumvent Kant's influence, is examined in Jonathan Riley's essay on his classic work On Liberty. The philosophical ideas of Kierkegaard, widely credited as the founder of modern existentialism, are explored by Stephen Evans in his essay on Philosophical Fragments. Marx's Capital, one of the most influential books of the modern age, is given expert treatment by Tom Rockmore. The volume closes with Nietzsche, whose appropriation of Kant led to a radical anti-philosophy. Rex Welshon dissects his most philosophical and widely read work, On the Genealogy of Morals.

Book The World as Will and Representation Part I

Download or read book The World as Will and Representation Part I written by Arthur Schopenhauer and published by Livraria Press. This book was released on 2024-05-09 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Part 1 of a new translation with Introduction of Arthur Schopenhauer's massive work, "Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung" or The World as Will and Representation. This work is sometimes translated as "The World as Will and Idea". This edition contains a new Afterword by the Translator. The first part was published in 1819, with a second version containing additional materials published in 1844. This is Volume II in the Complete Works of Arthur Schopenhauer by Livraria Press Schopenhauer enjoys little fame in modern Philosophic studies but was critically influential on some of the biggest names in history- Kafka, Freud, and Nietzsche among them. Like Kant, he is responding English Empiricism, borrowing heavily from Kant but then developing a bizarre new type of Platonism which is deeply pessimistic and pseudo-Buddhist. Schopenhauer's claim that reason is subject to Will is a critical shift that would be expounded upon by Nietzsche, leading to Freud's entire philosophic project. The entire idea of the Unconscious is rooted in Schopenhauer. From the brutality of this existence where we are oppressed and enslaved by the Will, art is the only escape. Here Nietzsche's Art-Philosophy begins to make sense in light of this deification of the experience of Art. Kafka was a reader of Schopenhauer, and one can see this emphasis on suffering being meaningless and inescapable

Book Schopenhauer The World as Will and Representation Volume 2

Download or read book Schopenhauer The World as Will and Representation Volume 2 written by Arthur Schopenhauer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Schopenhauer is to offer translations of the best modern German editions of Schopenhauer's work in a uniform format for Schopenhauer scholars, together with philosophical introductions and full editorial apparatus. The World as Will and Representation contains Schopenhauer's entire philosophy, ranging through epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of mind and action, aesthetics and philosophy of art, to ethics, the meaning of life and the philosophy of religion. This second volume was added to the work in 1844, and revised in 1859. Its chapters are officially 'supplements' to the first volume, but are indispensable for a proper appreciation of Schopenhauer's thought. Here we have his most mature reflections on many topics, including sex, death, conscious and unconscious desires, and the doctrines of salvation and liberation in Christian and Indian thought. Schopenhauer clarifies the nature of his metaphysics of the will, and synthesizes insights from a broad range of literary, scientific and scholarly sources. This new translation reflects the eloquence and power of Schopenhauer's prose, and renders philosophical terms accurately and consistently. It offers an introduction, glossary of names, bibliography, and succinct editorial notes.
