And from what has been said of them it appears that they were intended for the press by the author himself, and that they are now printed at the desire of many that have thought them worthy of it. As to the other parts, they were all published before but some of them so many years ago, that they have long since been out of print, and were become extremely scarce. And others of themat either but to get them reprinted. Which way therefore several gentlemen of learning, both here and elsewhere, who were sensible of the worth and usefulness of these writings, and lamented they should be in so few hands, determined to take; and knowing I had the honour to be acquainted with bishop Hooper's family, and had formerly been intrusted by the Bishop himself with the care of publishing one of his learned works, desired I would intercede with them for leave to publish the rest. This I very readily consented to do, having the same opinion of them which these gentlemen had; and being more over apprehensive, that, should they not be collected together and reprinted, while there were people living who could vouch for their being his, some of them might gradually be thrown by and forgot; (especially as his name was to none of them but his sermons and he might lose the credit, and the public the advantage of them; consequences, which it became one who had received so many obligations from his lordship, and wished well to the interests of religion and learning, to endea vour to prevent. I therefore took the first opportunity to apply to his lordship's nearest relation for the leave desired; who readily granted it, and kindly furnished me with such books and papers as were necessary for carrying on the edition; de siring every thing might be done in a manner worthy of his lordship's character. George Crabbe The success of some recent biographical works, evidently written by unpractised hands, suggested to me the possibility that my recollections of my father might be received with favor by the public. The rough draft of the following narrative was accordingly drawn up, and submitted to my father's friend, Mr. Thomas Moore, whom at that time I had never seen, and who, in returning it, was so kind as to assure me that he had read it with much interest, and conceived that, with a little correction, it might gratify the readers of Mr. Crabbe's Poetical Works. I afterwards transmitted it to his friend Mr. Rogers, who expressed himself in terms equally flattering to an inexperienced writer; and who - as, indeed, Mr. Moore had done before - gave me the most valuable species of assistance I could have received, by indicating certain passages that ought to be obliterated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of the Right Reverend George Hooper, D.D, Vol. 2 of 2: Sometime Bishop of Bath and Wells Upon the perusal heretofore of two very curious tracts that were published about the same time in the year 1685; the one by the late bishop of Peterborough, and the other by Dr. Bernard, first printed with Dr. Pococke's Commentary on Hosea; and upon the reading the Roman Foot and Denarius of Mr. Greaves, by them both justly celebrated; I began to inquire more nearly into the state of the old Hebrew measures; and, going upon the sure foundation of Mr. Greaves, and in the method of the bishop, and assisted by the copious informations of Dr. Bernard, I cast my thoughts into the following scheme: First, having considered the nature in general of the several measures of length, content, and weight, and their convenient relation one towards another; I laid down our English measures, as those to which I was to reduce the Jewish, for my clearer understanding of them. And then, because the knowledge of the Jewish measures was chiefly to be had from the accounts of them that are given us by men of different ages and nations; and it was as necessary, to have their several measures adjusted to ours; I was obliged to take into my notice some of the modern, but more especially those which had been used in old time by the Athenians and the Romans. And, thus provided, I was, in the last place, to produce and compare the most probable informations that have been given us of those Jewish measures; and to form thence as clear and as certain account of them as I could. And, accordingly, this inquiry will consist of four parts. The first will be of measures in general; and particularly of our own and other modern ones, which may be the most helpful to us. The second is to take a view of the Attic measures, for the sake of those Greek authors we are to consult. And the third inspects the Roman, (which could not be so well understood without the Attic, ) for the sake of the Latin writers. And the fourth will consider the Jewish measures themselves.
