Book excerpt: Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare published in 1597...Plot Summary : Romeo and Juliet is a tragic play written early in the career of William Shakespeare about two teenage "star-cross'd lovers" whose untimely deaths ultimately unite their feuding households. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal "young lovers". Extrait : Enter Sampson and Gregory, armed with Swords and Bucklers.Sam. Gregory, on my word, we'll not carry coals.Gre. No, for then we should be colliers.Sam. I mean, an we be in choler, we'll draw.Gre. Ay, while you live, draw your neck out of the collar.Sam. I strike quickly, being moved.Gre. But thou art not quickly moved to strike.Sam. A dog of the house of Montague moves me.Gre. To move is to stir, and to be valiant is to stand: therefore, if thou art moved, thou run'st away.Sam. A dog of that house shall move me to stand. I will take the wall of any man or maid of Montague's.Gre. That shows thee a weak slave; for the weakest goes to the wall.Sam. 'Tis true; and therefore women, being the weaker vessels, are ever thrust to the wall:--therefore, I will push Montague's men from the wall, and thrust his maids to the wall.Gre. The quarrel is between our masters, and us their men.Sam. 'Tis all one, I will show myself a tyrant: when I have fought with the men, I will be civil with the maids; I will cut off their heads.Gre. The heads of the maids?Sam. Ay, the heads of the maids, or their maidenheads; take it in what sense thou wilt.Gre. They must take it in sense, that feel it.Sam. Me they shall feel, while I am able to stand; and 'tis known, I am a pretty piece of flesh.Gre. 'Tis well, thou art not fish; if thou hadst, thou hadst been poor John. Draw thy tool; here comes two of the house of the Montagues...Biography : William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet, and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including collaborations, consist of approximately 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.Shakespeare was born and brought up in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, at age 49, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, which has stimulated considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by othersShakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were primarily comedies and histories, which are regarded as some of the best work ever produced in these genres. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights.
