Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of John Marston, Vol. 1 of 3 Marston's Works were edited in 1856 by Mr. Halliwell (3 vols. 8 vo.) for Mr. Russell Smith's Library of Old Authors. I yield to none in my admiration for the best and the most accurate of living Shakespearean scholars; but I am sure that Mr. Halliwell-Phillipps, who in his Outlines of the Life of Shakespeare has set so singularly high a standard of excellence, would be the first to acknowledge that his edition of Marston's Works needs revision. In the present volumes I have done my best to regulate the text, which is frequently very corrupt; but I am painfully conscious that I have left plenty of work for future editors. A valuable edition of Marston's poems was published in 1879, for private circulation, by Dr. Grosart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of John Marston, Vol. 1 of 3: Reprinted From the Original Editions; With Notes, and Some Account of His Life and Writings Mary, daughter of the Rev. William Wilkes, Chaplain to James I., and Rector of St. Martin's, co. Wilts. Now Wood, in a notice of Wilkes, says that the latter died at Buford St. Martin, in Wiltshire, of which he was rector, leaving a daughter named Mary, who was married to John Marston of the city of Coventry, gentleman; which John, dying 25 June, 1634, was buried in the church belonging to the Temple in London, near to the body of John Marston his father, sometimes a Counsellor of the Middle Temple. The John Marston in the first notice, and the min-law of the King's Chaplain, are thus shown to be the same person. He is also the dramatic writer, unless mother link in the chain of evidence he unnecessarily regarded as a curious but possible coincidence. In Ben Jonson's Conversations with William Drummond, it is stated Marston wrott his father-in-lawes preachings, and his father-in law his commedies; which seems, observes Gifford, a humorous allusion to the sombre air of Marston's comedies, as contrasted with the cheerful tone l of his father-inchw's discourses. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Adventures of John Marston Hall, Vol. 1 of 3 My father was a gentleman of small estate in Lincolnshire, whose family possessions, under a race of generous ancestors, had dwindled from splendid lordships to bare competence. His blood, which was derived from as noble a source as that of any in the land, had come down to him pure through a number of knights and nobles, who, though they were little scrupulous as to the means of spending their riches, were very careful not to augment them by cultivating any but the somewhat barren field of war. He made a love-match with a daughter of the second Lord Wilmerton; and, in order that his wife might not draw unpleasant comparisons between the station of her husband and that of her father, he frequented the court, and lived beyond his means. He was already in difficulties when I was born; but, like a brave man, he resolved to meet them boldly, and, after some solicitation, obtained a small military appointment, which increased his revenue without adding to his expenses. Loyalty with him was a passion, which, like love in other men, prevented him from seeing any faults in its object; and, of course, as the court well knew that no benefits could make him more loyal than he already was, it showered its favours upon persons whose affection was to be gained, leaving him to struggle on without further notice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Adventures of John Marston Hall, Vol. 3 of 3 Before we quitted Dumont, however, Mon sieur de Villardin, who never left any service I did him unrequited, proposed to give me in exchange, for the very uncertain pension which the government had bestowed upon me, a farm which lay contiguous to Juvigny, and which certainly rendered my baronial lands of a very respectable extent. I pointed out to the Duke that the present rents of the farm were far more than the amount of the pension, and that it was likely to yield still more; but' he insisted upon the arrangement; and i clearly saw that he wished to recompense the assistance I had afforded him at the hotel de Ville, without ren dering his gift burdensome, by bestowing it in the shape of a reward.
