Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engaging volume, Daniel Gardner explains the way in which the Four Books--Great Learning, Analects, Mencius, and Maintaining Perfect Balance--have been read and understood by the Chinese since the twelfth century. Selected passages in translation are accompanied by Gardner's comments, which incorporate selections from the commentary and interpretation of the renowned Neo-Confucian thinker, Zhu Xi (1130-1200). This study provides an ideal introduction to the basic texts in the Confucian tradition from the twelfth through the twentieth centuries. It guides the reader through Zhu Xi's influential interpretation of the Four Books, showing how Zhu, through the genre of commentary, gave new coherence and meaning to these foundational texts. Since the Four Books with Zhu Xi's commentary served as the basic textbook for Chinese schooling and the civil service examinations for more than seven hundred years, this book illustrates as well the nature of the standard Chinese educational curriculum.

Book The Analects of Confucius The Books of Confucian Wisdom Complete

Download or read book The Analects of Confucius The Books of Confucian Wisdom Complete written by James Legge and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-08-27 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete twenty books of philosophic discussion by the superb Chinese sage Confucius are presented here anew. Originally, these sayings and conversations were penned during the Warring States period of Chinese antiquity. The subjects range from wise behavior in times of crisis to instruction upon how to live a peaceful life characterized by serenity, humility and good work. The importance of family life and community cooperation are alluded to, offering insight into the mores and customs of ancient China. The politics of the time, rife with infighting between noble families and dukedoms, attract consideration of Confucius and his companions. To better illustrate his points, examples and analogies are readily offered by Confucius, who engages with other philosophers through the course of the twenty named books comprising the core text. This edition's translator is James Legge, a Scottish Sinologist who spent his lifetime in China translating the philosophical and artistic classics.

Book excerpt: The Book of Rites, literally the Record of Rites, is a collection of texts describing the social forms, administration, and ceremonial rites of the Zhou Dynasty as they were understood in the Warring States and the early Han periods. The Book of Rites, along with the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli) and the Book of Etiquette and Rites (Yili), which are together known as the "Three Li (San li)," constitute the ritual (li) section of the Five Classics which lay at the core of the traditional Confucian canon (Each of the "five" classics is a group of works rather than a single text). As a core text of the Confucian canon, it is also known as the Classic of Rites, which some scholars believe this was the original title before it was changed by Dai Sheng.

Book The Five Classics

Download or read book The Five Classics written by Confucius, and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Five Classics are five pre-Qin Chinese books that form part of the traditional Confucian canon. During the Western Han dynasty, which adopted Confucianism as its official ideology, these texts became part of the state-sponsored curriculum. It was during this period that the texts first began to be considered together as a set collection, and to be called collectively the "Five Classics". I Ching - The book contains a divination system comparable to Western geomancy or the West African Ifá system. In Western cultures and modern East Asia, it is still widely used for this purpose. Shu King - A collection of documents and speeches alleged to have been written by rulers and officials of the early Zhou period and before. It is possibly the oldest Chinese narrative, and may date from the 6th century BC. It includes examples of early Chinese prose. The Shih King - A collection of 305 poems divided into 160 folk songs, 105 festal songs sung at court ceremonies, and 40 hymns and eulogies sung at sacrifices to heroes and ancestral spirits of the royal house. The Li Ki - Describes ancient rites, social forms and court ceremonies. The version studied today is a re-worked version compiled by scholars in the third century BC rather than the original text, which is said to have been edited by Confucius himself. Spring and Autumn Annals - A historical record of the State of Lu, Confucius's native state, 722–481 BC.
