Book The Working Faith of a Liberal Theologian Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Working Faith of a Liberal Theologian Classic Reprint written by T. Rhondda Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Working Faith of a Liberal Theologian This is what we say to-day to the old creeds whose forms we reject, and personally I would extend it far beyond the Christian creeds to almost every widespread belief that ever held the souls of men for a long time. Immanence was the real meaning even of Metempsychosis and Animism. What made it possible for men to believe that there was a spirit in the corn, in the flower, in the tree, in the animal, and that the spirit of man could pass into an animal, and even into an inanimate object, was the truth that Spirit is immanent in all things and animals and men, and that this Spirit is one throughout the universe. One life, and that life Spirit, is manifesting everywhere. If there be truths underlying such beliefs as those of Metempsychosis and Animism, surely the presumption will be in favour of substantial truth being found in all the great Christian doctrines. Liberal theology will endeavour to interpret this truth in such a way as not to conflict with modern knowledge, to restate it in terms of the modern mind. Book Essentials and Non Essentials in Religion

Download or read book Essentials and Non Essentials in Religion written by James Freeman Clarke and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials and Non-Essentials in Religion: Six Lectures Delivered in the Music Hall, Boston I Propose to speak of essentials and non-essentials in religion. My purpose is, not to defend a creed or a sect, but to point out that common ground of essential religion on which all good men can stand side by side. For it is mostly about non-essentials that men differ: on what is most vital or important, they usually agree. If, therefore, I can show the essential unity of faith, or life, which underlies all seeming opposition and contradiction of sects or creeds, I shall do a more important work than by making the most triumphant argument in favor of my own opinions, or against those of other sects or parties. Book The Assurance of Faith

Download or read book The Assurance of Faith written by Louis Berkhof and published by . This book was released on 2004-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis Berkhof (1873-1957) is best known for his one volume "Systematic Theology", that has gone through numerous editions and been translated in numerous languages. Here we have the humble genius of Berkhof in a small but priceless study on the subject close to the heart of everyone concerned about eternity. In his own words: "This little book is born of the conviction that the subject of the assurance of faith deserves more attention that it often receives in the present day. We are not living in an age in which Christian certitude can be taken for granted. The enemy is exerting himself to destroy the foundation which God has laid for our faith in his excellent Word. Doubts respecting the most fundamental truths of the Bible are rampant everywhere and are making inroads in the Church of Jesus Christ. Question-marks are fast taking the place of positive assertions of the truth. Such an atmosphere is not conducive to the assurance of salvation, but threatens to rob the Christian of this precious gem. It is hoped that this little treatise may be of some service in the cultivation of assurance especially among our rising generation."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Doctrine and Systematic Theology The pages of this volume contain the substance of lectures on Systematic Theology which have been given by the writer, for nearly forty years, to successive classes of students at the Moravian College and Theological Seminary of Bethlehem, Pa. It is the first work of this kind written in the English language by a member of the oldest Protes tant Church, founded by the followers of J ohn Hus in 1457. While in no sense an official publication, but entirely inde pendent and personal in its statements and conclusions, it will be found to represent fairly the view - point of the Mo ravian Church or Unitas F ratrum, -as to the leading features of Christian Doctrine and Systematic Theology. Some persons may think it ill advised to publish such a work at this time of theological unrest and of apparently sharp contrasts between traditional and modern theology. But as to all that is really essential in Christian doctrine, it is -as timely now as ever, to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered unto the saints (jude v. The Gospel of Jesus Christ, our blessed Saviour, is as well suited to the needs of the twentieth cen tury of the Christian era as to the first. As for non essentials, such as denominational distinctions, ecclesiastical formulas, dogmatical definitions and historical criticism, it behooves all honest seekers after the truth, whether they call themselves orthodox or liberal, conservative or ad vanced, to acknowledge the limitations of our religious knowledge and understanding. For at best we know in part and we see in a mirror darkly (i Cor. Realizing this truth, we will be prepared to discuss all ques tions that present themselves in the different departments of Christian doctrine, in the spirit of charity, without narrow prejudice or assumption of a monopoly of wisdom, taking into consideration, if possible, all the new light which science, history and Christian experience have shed[preface to the jfirst Ebition. Book Christian Theology for a Secular Society

Download or read book Christian Theology for a Secular Society written by Mark G. McKim and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It's hard to be the only one." That single sentence from a teenage congregant sums up the conviction that motivated Christian Theology for a Secular Society. In these dying days of Christendom, the reality that most Western Christians face is living out their faith as a minority in the midst of a culture that is at every level--personal, institutional, and societal--secular in nature. While most living in Western societies still affirm belief in God and often other vaguely recognizable Christian beliefs, these affirmations frequently have little to do with how daily life is lived. The idea that the God best known to us in Jesus Christ is actually in charge of life is foreign. For most, Christianity simply does not form an overarching system of meaning that shapes life. Instead, life is lived largely without reference to God. And to live any other way is often "hard." In this volume, Mark McKim sets out to "do" theology in this context. How does one explain the core historic Christian doctrines in a way that makes sense in a secular culture--and in a way that will gain a hearing? What does it mean to be the church in this new situation? Throughout, McKim asks the question, so what? as he relates Christian teachings to a secular society and to what is actually happening in the local church. McKim's goal is to enable the singing of the Lord's song in the new and strange land of a secular society.
