Book The Worker and His Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Worker and His Church Classic Reprint written by Eric M. North and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Worker and His Church Every Christian worker is interested in the church. He knows that it is due to the church more than to any other institution that he has come to know and to love Jesus Christ. He knows that the church is constantly working to bring the knowledge and love of God to men and to promote his kingdom throughout the world. He also knows that in it he often finds the very best place in which to do his own work for the advancement of the kingdom. He is himself a member of it. Because he is thus vitally con cerned with the life of the church, this little book has been written to help him to understand how the Christian church came to be and just how it has developed through the nineteen centuries of its history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Senior Worker and His Work The present Sunday - school awakening is the brightest and most hopeful Sign in the religious world. All the Churches are showing a new appreciation of the value of the child and an unwonted confidence in the Bible and its teachings. This has come none too soon. The Church can not hope to prosper as we long to have it unless it succeeds in holding more Of her young people than she is holding or has ever held. This is distinctly the pressing problem of all the Churches. The religious interests Of our own children are incomparably the Church's first responsibility and greatest work. We shall be discredited both at home and in the mission fields if we prove powerless to recruit our member ship in larger numbers from our own homes. The Senior Department of the Sunday-school exists mainly on paper. Even our best organized schools seldom have a Senior Department separately organized and worked. And yet it is important - indispensable - to successful work. TO what purpose do we win the younger scholars if we lose them in the senior years? Book The Intermediate Worker and His Work Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Intermediate Worker and His Work Classic Reprint written by Edward S. Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Intermediate Worker and His Work As education is becoming the dominant interest in society, religious education is coming to its own in the Church. Her own children are at once her first responsibility and her only hope. She can not lose these and win anything. If she saves these she can save the world. The new life in the modern Sunday-school is the expression of this deepening conviction. We are coming to see that no sacrifice is too deep and no expense too great for the winning of our youth to Christ and building them up in Christ. Their responsiveness to skillful training is a moral wonder. With the decline of the feeling of hopelessness engendered by an over-estimate of heredity, there has come into our work a new confidence based upon the teachings of science as to the priority of environment. Oppenheim says, "The human being, in the first part of his existence, is much more unformed than is generally thought. The determining factors are not as parents usually consider them." He adds that the effects of heredity are not settled facts, but that "the qualities of goodness and virtue are purely functional, the result of friction, social interaction, environment." This means that by supplying the right environing influences we may win and hold all the children we desire. Book Building a Working Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book Building a Working Church Classic Reprint written by Samuel Charles Black and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building a Working Church This book is written for all Builders of the Church, whether they be ministers or laymen, whether they build on her material or her spiritual side. Perfect or imperfect, the Church is the visible body of Christ, and therefore is deserving of the highest consideration. The author is convinced that strength and numbers can be added to the Church much more rapidly than they have been in the past, and that it is the supreme duty of Christians now living to make these additions. There is not a theory in the book. Experience has been gathered from country and city missions, from churches in villages, towns and cities. Only plans that have proved their value over and over again are included. The author feels safe in guaranteeing results when the work suggested is enthusiastically done. A church has done only half her work when she has maintained herself. As a man keeps himself in health that he may do his life work, so a church should maintain herself that she may do the work committed to her by her Lord. Beginning at Jerusalem the whole world must be evangelized. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inner Mission: A Handbook for Christian Workers When Wichern, on the afternoon Of September 22, 1848, delivered his famous address at the Wittenberg Kirchentag, he sounded a trumpet call that aroused all Protestant Germany. For almost two decades he had been favored with extraordinary Opportunities for Observing the spiritual, moral, and physical wretchedness Of large masses Of the people; he had made a careful study of the causes which led to their degradation; he had clearly discerned through whom and by what means and methods the required relief must be brought about; and now, filled with warmest love to his Lord and to suffern humanity, and with a glowing zeal for service, he called upon the entire Protestant Church of Germany to make the work of the Inner Mission, which so far had been only sporadic, a part of her own life and being, and thus to demonstrate her faith by her love. That hour marked the beginning Of the Inner Mission as a general and systematized movement. As the immediate result of the impulse given by Wichern, the Central Committee for the Inner Mission of the German Evangelical Church was or ganized at Berlin, January 4, 1849, to be followed since then by many similar associations, provincial and local, in all parts of Germany, in the Scandinavian countries, and now even in America. Book Bishop Asbury

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bishop Asbury: A Biographical Study for Christian Workers Excepting the facts relating to the early life of Bishop Asbury, for the accuracy of which I must hold myself responsible, my principal authorities for the statements contained in this volume are the following: - Asbury's Journal. Wesley's Works. Minutes of the Methodist Conference. The Arminian and Methodist Magazines. "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church," by Abel Stevens, LL.D. "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church," by Nathan Bangs, D.D. "Life of Dr. Coke," by Dr. Etheridge. For the portrait I am indebted to my friend, Mr. W. E. Whitehouse. Asbury sat twice for his portrait, and each was engraved and published; but I may safely say that that which I have the satisfaction of prefixing to this volume is a truer likeness than either of them. For well nigh eighteen years has he edited and published a journal in the interest of church work among the colored race. In addition to the literary, and a large part of the mechanical work, in its publication, it has been at his own financial cost. We do not regret the sacrifice we have made. Nor is this little volume in any way to financially help us per sonally. In addition to the circu lation of information about the col ored work, it is our most ardent hope that sufficient may be realized from the sale of this publication to cancel a mortgage of a few hun dred dollars on the Rectory of St. James' Church. Our little congre gation, at present, is engaged in wrestling with a $4000 debt upon our church, and we are loth to di vert their effort therefrom to the debt upon the Rectory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gospel Workers: Or, a Plan for Doing Good, for Everybody The Son of God, while on earth in our na ture, taught the most important truths by par ables, always using something with which his hearers were well acquainted. Palestine was a land of vineyards, and thousands earned their daily bread by laboring in them. Moun tain-sides were generally chosen as the place 'to locate the vineyard, and as most of the mountains were stony, it required much labor to prepare the ground and plant the vines and prune them. Some one was appointed to oversee the work, and pay the laborers for their services. The pay was in proportion to the work done. As a matter of justice, those who loitered away their time in idle ness received little or nothing when night came. Christ introduced this parable of the vineyard, and the labor in cultivating it, to show how mcral evil was to be removed from this sin-cursed world. Book The Path of Labor Theme

Download or read book The Path of Labor Theme written by Mary Katharine Jones Bennett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Path of Labor; Theme: Christianity and the World's Workers Those who labored with such desire and earnestness for the selection of a theme for the textbooks for 1918-1919, that should present not only a vital but a paramount issue to the church at this time when only great realities and issues claim serious thought, chose better than they knew when they elected Christianity and the World's Workers. It is generally conceded that the most decisive single factor in the world contest today is that of Labor. That there is always danger of over emphasis by any group having the power in the body politic is axiomatic. It becomes therefore even more important now than when the theme was suggested (nearly two years ago) for our church constituency to address itself to such a study of economic relationships as shall open the way for a more complete understanding of the fundamental rights and facts involved, that a basis of thinking may be attained whereby the mutual welfare of all society may be advanced along the line of a Christian democracy. "Christian" because the body of influence set in motion by Christ is the greatest spiritual force in the life of humanity, and upon it depends the world's hope for redemption from oppression, injustice and war. At the outset of our thinking on this theme we might profitably seek a definition of the term "Christianity," for this word which calls so inspiringly to millions of people carries a sinister reminder of pogroms and persecutions to millions of others. The Rev. Dr. Charles Jefferson of New York City, says: "Christianity is a large word, and it cannot be defined in a sentence for the reason that it is used in different meanings by different persons, and also by the same person on different occasions, and for different purposes.
