In our current era of innovation and information overload, it may feel harder than ever to understand the meaning of work or to have a sense of vocation or calling. Matt Perman has spent his career helping people learn how to do work in a gospel-centered and effective way. What's Best Next explains his approach to unlocking productivity and fulfillment in work by showing how faith relates to work, even in our everyday grind. What's Best Next is packed with biblical and theological insight and practical counsel that you can put into practice today, such as: How to create a mission statement for your life that's actually practicable. How to delegate to people in a way that really empowers them. How to overcome time killers like procrastination, interruptions, and multitasking by turning them around and making them work for you. How to process workflow efficiently and get your email inbox to zero every day. How to have peace of mind without needing to have everything under control. How generosity is actually the key to unlocking productivity. This expanded edition includes: a new chapter on productivity in a fallen world a new appendix on being more productive with work that requires creative thinking. Productivity isn't just about getting more things done. It's about getting the right things done--the things that count, make a difference, and move the world forward. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Worker and His Bible 1. The Bible a Collection of Books. The word Bible is derived from the Greek. It is the plural form biblia of a noun biblion, which may be translated "Little Book." From the Greek language the word passed into the Latin, where biblia came to be regarded as a noun in the singular. As such it was early adopted into the language of the western Church, and it is so used in the languages of modern Europe. The use of the noun as a singular is responsible for much misapprehension, because the Bible can never be rightly appreciated unless it is borne in mind that it is not so much one book as a library consisting of many books, written by different authors, in different times and places, and representing different stages of religious and ethical development. There are sixty-six separate writings in the collection as found in the modern English translations. The Bible is divided into two great divisions called the Old Testament and the New Testament respectively. The designation Testament is somewhat misleading. It arose from an accidental mistranslation into Latin of a Greek word meaning covenant, which in turn goes back to a Hebrew word having the same meaning. Hence it would be far more accurate to speak of the Old Covenant and the New Covenant; and, indeed, one of the early Church fathers speaks of "the divine Scriptures, the so-called Old and New Covenants." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an invitation to embark on a journey of discovery that marshals our imagination and emotions, our intellect and will. God the Worker seeks to answer the ultimate questions: - What is God really like? - Can we know God intimately? - Where do we fit into the overall scheme of things? In his quest for answers, Robert Banks opens up the world of the Bible and everyday life as he explores dynamic images of God at work: as composer and performer, as metalworker and potter, as garmentmaker and dresser, as gardener and orchardist, as farmer and winemaker, as shepherd and pastoralist, as tentmaker and camper, as builder and architect. He shows how, through the language and idea of work, the divine hand is revealed. This book offers us the opportunity to encounter God in a way that is mind-expanding, life-changing, work-transforming--taking us to the very edges of human understanding. The author sees the Bible as a guidebook and source of insight that is completely fresh, but paradoxically as old as the book itself.

Book excerpt: A new commentary for today's world, The Story of God Bible Commentary explains and illuminates each passage of Scripture in light of the Bible's grand story. The first commentary series to do so, SGBC offers a clear and compelling exposition of biblical texts, guiding everyday readers in how to creatively and faithfully live out the Bible in their own contexts. Its story-centric approach is ideal for pastors, students, Sunday school teachers, and laypeople alike. Each volume employs three main, easy-to-use sections designed to help readers live out God's story: LISTEN to the Story: Includes complete NIV text with references to other texts at work in each passage, encouraging the reader to hear it within the Bible's grand story. EXPLAIN the Story: Explores and illuminates each text as embedded in its canonical and historical setting. LIVE the Story: Reflects on how each text can be lived today and includes contemporary stories and illustrations to aid preachers, teachers, and students. —Ephesians— Like all of Paul's letters, Ephesians is centered in the gospel and its implications. It tells the story of what God has done in Christ and spells out the ethical implications of this story. But the letter to the Ephesians is unique among Paul's letters in many ways, including in how it tells of the story of God, beginning "before the creation of the world" and ending in eternity. Edited by Scot McKnight and Tremper Longman III, and written by a number of top-notch theologians, The Story of God Bible Commentary series will bring relevant, balanced, and clear-minded theological insight to any biblical education or ministry.
