Book The Middle East Supply Centre

Download or read book The Middle East Supply Centre written by Martin W. Wilmington and published by Suny Press. This book was released on 1971 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, the United States and the United Kingdom cooperated in the successful operation of a regional organization which indisputably saved the Middle East for the Allied cause and which, if perpetuated, might have formed the basis for regional peace and stability. This was the Middle East Supply Centre, whose creation, evolution, responsibilities, and activities are described analytically in this volume. It was an agency, says the author, "bestriding the Middle East economy like a giant and imposing its views and wishes on the production and consumption of nearly 100 million people toiling in a vast sub-continent." Even in the midst of global war, M.E.S.C. not only supervised the feeding of the people of the region, but also assured that industries kept producing and that the economy poured out large quantities of munitions and quartermaster items for Allied armies in the Middle East and beyond. At the end of the war, diverse proposals were made to convert M.E.S.C. into a "regional bureau" that would bring the wartime seeds of regional cooperation to permanent flowering for betterment and peace in the Middle East under the United Nations, under Anglo-American sponsorship, or under the Middle East countries themselves. Failure to obtain American participation resulted in the collapse of these efforts and M.E.S.C. was dissolved in November 1945. Beyond the author's narrative and analysis of the Centre's wartime logistical activities, he has placed the whole enterprise in a far larger setting: Anglo-American collaboration: the imperious influence of world powers; the aspirations of underdeveloped nations; and the growth in the area of "economic regionalism." Commander Sir Robert Jackson, wartime Director General of the Centre who now holds appointments with several governments in the Third World and is also Senior Consultant to the United Nations Development Programme, has written the foreword for the book, in which he views the activities--and the legacy--of the Centre from the perspective of more than 25 years.

Book Britain and the Politics of Modernization in the Middle East 1945 1958

Download or read book Britain and the Politics of Modernization in the Middle East 1945 1958 written by Paul W. T. Kingston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-11-07 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an historically informed critique of the theory and practice of development assistance, this book examines Britain's foreign aid programme in the Middle East in the 1940s and 1950s. After an assessment of the origins of what was dubbed the 'peasants, not pashas' policy - notably the link between development, sterling balances, and post-war imperial strategy - the author focuses on planning and policy debates between British development experts, their American rivals, and Middle Eastern technocrats. These debates, which centred on issues such as afforestation, irrigation, and rural credit, raise important questions about the nature and limits of the development process within the Middle East and the Third World which the author explores in his analysis. This 1996 book will be of interest to development practitioners and scholars in development studies, as well as to students of Middle East and imperial history.

Book Survey of British Commonwealth Affairs

Download or read book Survey of British Commonwealth Affairs written by Nicholas Mansergh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1968. This book falls into three parts. The first gives some account of the impact of war upon the Commonwealth and upon its individual member nations; the second records the post-war changes in its composition, while the third examines some of the domestic and external problems that confronted the Commonwealth in the bleak mid-years of the century. Each of these topics, if treated exhaustively, would require a volume and what is attempted in this book is no more than the analysis of certain themes which seem to bear most closely on the idea of the Commonwealth and its place in the history of our times.

Book Sources in British Political History 1900 1951

Download or read book Sources in British Political History 1900 1951 written by C. Cook and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1970 to 1977 a major project to uncover source material for students of contemporary British history and politics was undertaken at the British Library of Political and Economic Science. Fiananced by the Social Science Research Council, and under the direction of Dr Chris Cook, this project has attempted a unique and systematic operation to locate, and then to make readily available, those archives that provide the indispensable source material for the contemporary historian. This volume (the fifth in the series) provides a guide to the papers of propagandists who were influential in British public life. Included in this volume are the papers of such persons as newspaper editors, leading economists, social reformers, socialist thinkers, trade unionists, industrialists and a variety of theologians and philanthropists. In all, this volume not only completes the findings of the project but opens up the archive sources of a hitherto neglected area of research into contemporary social and political history.

Book The Cravath Firm and Its Predecessors 1819 1947

Download or read book The Cravath Firm and Its Predecessors 1819 1947 written by Robert Taylor Swaine and published by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 1972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprint of the sole edition. Volume I: The Cravath Firm and Its Predecessors 1819-1906; Volume II: The Cravath Firm Since 1906; Volume III: The Cravath Associates; (With Photographs of the Cravath Partners). Cravath, Swaine and Moore, as it is known today, one of the most prestigious law firms in the United States, was involved in some of the most important events in history. It was also a decisive influence on the direction of American legal practice. Under the leadership of Paul D. Cravath in the 1890s, it developed the organizational model based on a large staff of associates, partners and clerical helpers that continues to dominate the modern urban law firm. Swaine [1886-1949], then a principal partner, drew heavily on the Cravath archives in the preparation of this work. The most extensive history of the firm, it is enhanced by Swaine's personal perspective. (He joined Cravath in 1910). The final volume lists biographical data for every associate and partner from 1899 to 1948.
