Book Late Woodland Societies

Download or read book Late Woodland Societies written by Thomas E. Emerson and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeologists across the Midwest have pooled their data and perspectives to produce this indispensable volume on the Native cultures of the Late Woodland period (approximately A.D. 300?1000). Sandwiched between the well-known Hopewellian and Mississippian eras of monumental mound construction, theøLate Woodland period has received insufficient attention from archaeologists, who have frequently characterized it as consisting of relatively drab artifact assemblages. The close connections between this period and subsequent Mississippian and Fort Ancient societies, however, make it especially valuable for cross-cultural researchers. Understanding the cultural processes at work during the Late Woodland period will yield important clues about the long-term forces that stimulate and enhance social inequality. Late Woodland Societies is notable for its comprehensive geographic coverage; exhaustive presentation and discussion of sites, artifacts, and prehistoric cultural practices; and critical summaries of interpretive perspectives and trends in scholarship. The vast amount of information and theory brought together, examined, and synthesized by the contributors produces a detailed, coherent, and systematic picture of Late Woodland lifestyles across the Midwest. The Late Woodland can now be seen as a dynamic time in its own right and instrumental to the emergence of complex late prehistoric cultures across the Midwest and Southeast.

Book An Analysis of the Woodland Ceramics from Galum Crossing site 21C4 29

Download or read book An Analysis of the Woodland Ceramics from Galum Crossing site 21C4 29 written by Gabrielle Aberle and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated on upper Galum Creek at the northwest margin of the Big Muddy River drainage basin, the primary occupation at Galum Crossing consisted of an early Late Woodland habitation dating from approximately A.D. 450 to the early A.D. 700s. The cultural-historical affiliation of the Woodland occupation and the relationship of Galum Crossing to local and regional contemporaneous sites were assessed using radiocarbon dating and an attribute-based analysis of the Woodland ceramic assemblage. This provided data for examining the designation of the proposed Jamestown phase as a transitional unit between the Middle Woodland Crab Orchard Tradition and the Late Woodland Raymond phase. Regional comparisons indicated during the early Late Woodland, the upper Galum Creek valley was utilized by groups associated with cultural systems in the Big Muddy and American Bottom. For the Jamestown phase to be a useful heuristic construct of Late Woodland systematics in southern Illinois, it should be redefined as a local subphase for the Big Muddy drainage reflecting a period of interaction resulting from an influx of groups from the south and west/northwest. The interval should be adjusted to A.D. 400 to A.D. 750 and its geographic relevance limited to the northwestern margins of the Big Muddy drainage pending further investigations in the upper Big Muddy, the Marys, and the lower Kaskaskia river drainages.

Download or read book The Sea Is My Country written by Joshua L. Reid and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Makahs, a tribal nation at the most northwestern point of the contiguous United States, a deep relationship with the sea is the locus of personal and group identity. Unlike most other indigenous tribes whose lives are tied to lands, the Makah people have long placed marine space at the center of their culture, finding in their own waters the physical and spiritual resources to support themselves. This book is the first to explore the history and identity of the Makahs from the arrival of maritime fur-traders in the eighteenth century through the intervening centuries and to the present day. Joshua L. Reid discovers that the “People of the Cape” were far more involved in shaping the maritime economy of the Pacific Northwest than has been understood. He examines Makah attitudes toward borders and boundaries, their efforts to exercise control over their waters and resources as Europeans and Americans arrived, and their embrace of modern opportunities and technology to maintain autonomy and resist assimilation. The author also addresses current environmental debates relating to the tribe's customary whaling and fishing rights and illuminates the efforts of the Makahs to regain control over marine space, preserve their marine-oriented identity, and articulate a traditional future.

Book Native American Interactions

Download or read book Native American Interactions written by Michael S. Nassaney and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the early cultural clashes between Native Americans and Europeans have long engaged scholars, far less attention has been paid to interactions among indigenous peoples themselves prior to the contact period. The essays in this volume, derived largely from the 1992 meeting of the Southeastern Archaeological Conference, mark a major step in correcting that imbalance. Long before Europeans sailed west in search of the East, Native Americans of various ethnic groups were encountering each other and interacting socially, both amicably and otherwise. Over the course of ten thousand years - from Paleoindian to Mississippian times - these interactions had a profound effect on the historical development of these societies and their material culture, social relations, and institutions of integration. In probing such encounters, the contributors reject reductive models and instead combine a variety of theoretical orientations - including world systems theory, Marxist analysis, and ecosystems approaches - with empirical evidence from the archaeological record.

Book The Civilian Conservation Corps in Southern Illinois 1933 1942

Download or read book The Civilian Conservation Corps in Southern Illinois 1933 1942 written by Kay Rippelmeyer and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on more than thirty years of meticulous research, Kay Rippelmeyer details the Depression-era history of the simultaneous creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois. Through the stories of the men who worked in CCC camps devoted to soil and forest conservation projects, she offers a fascinating look into an era of utmost significance to the identity, citizens, wildlife, and natural landscape of the region. Rippelmeyer outlines the geologic and geographic history of southern Illinois, from Native American uses of the land to the timber industry’s decimation of the forest by the 1920s. Detailing both the economic hardships and agricultural land abuse plaguing the region during the Depression, she reveals how the creation of the CCC under Franklin Delano Roosevelt coincided with the regional campaign for a national forest and how locals first became aware of and involved with the program. Rippelmeyer mined CCC camp records from the National Archives, newspaper accounts and other correspondence and conducted dozens of oral interviews with workers and their families to re-create life in the camps. An extensive camp compendium augments the volume, featuring numerous photographs, camp locations and dates of operation, work history, and company rosters. Satisfying public curiosity and the need for factual information about the camps in southern Illinois, this is an essential contribution to regional history and a window to the national impact of the CCC.

Book A Terminal Middle Woodland Ceramic Complex from Southern Illinois

Download or read book A Terminal Middle Woodland Ceramic Complex from Southern Illinois written by Mackenzie Smyth Caldwell Rohm and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the results of a formal descriptive analysis, comparative analysis, thin-section analysis, and thermoluminescence dating of a ceramic assemblage from site 11Mx109 believed to date to the late Middle Woodland (circa AD 400). Site 11Mx109 is located above the Ohio River in the Black Bottom, Massac County, Illinois and was excavated in 1974 by Jon Muller as part of Southern Illinois University's field school in archaeology. The assemblage is unique to the area and cannot be fit into the previously established local cultural sequence. Consisting primarily of grog-tempered plainware and including some grog-tempered decorated wares commonly associated with Hopewellian types, the 11Mx109 pottery looks completely dissimilar from the recognized local Middle Woodland pottery. Such a level of participation in Hopewellian trade and interaction has not been documented previously in southern Illinois. The data from this research are used to consider the source and scope of lingering Hopewellian influence in the lower Ohio River valley as well as issues concerning the assumed degree of cultural continuity and population diversity in the region at the close of the Middle Woodland Period.
