Book Wonewoc Wisconsin

Download or read book Wonewoc Wisconsin written by Dennis Steinbrenner and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wonewoc, Wisconsin: The First Forty Years is an attempt to compile the history of this small village in Wisconsin from its initial exploration and settlement to its incorporation. In attempting to enumerate the growth of this village it was necessary to provide background material in the nature of Indian land acquisitions and the formation of Juneau County. Primary sources of local information are almost nonexistent. Personal papers, diaries, and the like from the middle 1800's, dealing with Wonewoc history, were not available. The only primary source, other than newspapers dating from the 1880's, was a newspaper column written by Ruth Huff in the 1940's and 1950's. Her column often cited historical data in connection with Wonewoc. She used, as her foundation for fact, a diary kept by her father, Charles Huff, one of the early pioneers of Wonewoc.

Book Great Pages in History from the Wisconsin State Journal 1852 2002

Download or read book Great Pages in History from the Wisconsin State Journal 1852 2002 written by Frank Denton and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating collection reproduces the most important front pages in the history of the Wisconsin State Journal newspaper, from its first publication under that name on September 30, 1852, to the current "War on Terrorism." See what Wisconsinites first read about Abraham Lincoln's election and assassination, Custer's last stand against the Sioux, the first votes by women, Henry Ford's $5 daily wage, the Saint Valentine's Day mob massacre in Chicago, the disappearance of Amelia Earhart as she attempted to fly around the world . . . and the wars, elections, crimes, and social revolutions that have defined the past century and a half. Each front page, reproduced from the original, is readable down to the smallest type. In 2002 the Wisconsin State Journal celebrates its Sesquicentennial, marking one hundred and fifty years of service to the people of Madison and the State of Wisconsin. The newspaper had an earlier inception as the Madison Express in 1839, when Madison was a territorial town on the frontier and statehood was still nine years away. Readers will notice the newspaper's appearance has changed nearly as much as have the methods of gathering the news and producing the paper. But readers' fascination with and hunger for the news of each day remain strong.

Download or read book The History of Wisconsin Volume II written by Richard N. Current and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume in the History of Wisconsin series introduces us to the first generation of statehood, from the conversion of prairie and forests into farmland to the development of cities and industry. In addition, this volume presents a synthesis of the Civil War and Reconstruction era in Wisconsin. Scarcely a decade after entering the Union, the state was plunged into the nationwide debate over slavery, the secession crisis, and a war in which 11,000 "Badger Boys in Blue" gave their lives. Wisconsin's role in the Civil War is chronicled, along with the post-war years. Complete with photographs from the Historical Society's collections, as well as many pertinent maps, this book is a must-have for anyone interested in this era of Wisconsin's history.
