Book Some Famous Women Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Famous Women Classic Reprint written by Louise Creighton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Famous Women IN this little book I am going to tell you about some of the women who have been famous in the past. There are perhaps many names more famous than those I have chosen, but it was not always the best women who were the most talked about. In the past it was seldom that any woman, who was not a royal lady or some great aristocrat, became known to the world. In the early days of Christianity, many women suffered bravely for their faith, and later in the convents there were studious nuns who became known for their learning. In the account of St. Hilda you will read of one of the most famous of these. But most women were busy in keeping their houses, and had to do many things which no woman would dream of doing now. Cloth and linen had to be woven at home, simple medicines and ointments were made by the great ladies, who had often to act as doctors as well as nurses. Only few women had any book learning, and it was long before it was thought desirable for a woman to learn to writef When good schools were started for boys, few people thought it desirable to do anything for the education of girls. It was not till the nineteenth century that a change began, and that people as a rule began to think that, as girls had minds as well as boys, it was as well to give them the chance of learning. When you read about Mrs. Somerville, you will see how great was the change in her lifetime. No one troubled to teach her when she was a Child, but before her death the first colleges for women were founded at Cambridge. Joan of Kent is an example of the aimless life led by a great lady in the Middle Ages who was kindly and beloved, but did not know how to make her life of use to others. Margaret Beaumont was also a great lady and might have spent her days in pleasure, but the experiences of her life made her serious, and she used her life and her money in the service of others. Since their day, there have been many great ladies who have been like one or other of these two. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Daughters of America

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daughters of America: Or, Women of the Century America has been richly blessed in its women, as well as its men, of patriotism, intelligence, usefulness, and moral worth. Indeed, it has been a marvel to many in the Old World, that the women of the New have been in many instances so thoroughly cultured, so admirably developed morally and intellectually, amid so much that was new and therefore crude in society, and in a freedom which the women of European nations have never enjoyed, and of which those of Asiatic peoples never dreamed. A cultured Christian women of English birth and education, but now in a lovely Scottish home, wrote to the writer of this volume, that, when visiting America, that which she most enjoyed "was the sense of freedom," - a freedom which has been the high privilege of the women of our first century, and will be yet more the glorious heritage of the women of the second, as the ripened fruit is garnered from the promise-blossom. "It seemed to me," wrote the lady above mentioned, "that by that freedom I was lifted up to a larger and diviner life, and a tender and reverent expectation of glorious possibilities for our race, and especially for women." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Women of America And so it has happened that when I have in the forth-coming pages, used my note books at all, I have used them only as back grounds, trusting that to my readers, as to me, people are more interesting than things, and that the comparatively few women of whom I have written in these chapters may prove to them more appealing than would such statistical accounts of a larger number of women as I, after a so short preparation, could have made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Find the Woman The day after moving in, while Mrs. O'shea was unpacking'the trunk and Mangus o'shea was shay ing at a broken triangle of mirror stuck in the win dow, the boy's eyes caught a shiny something in an open cardboard box. In wonder, with a queer, sick ish feeling of recognition he stooped down and tool it - a little golden heart with a star of white stones on the cover. Strange memories, as if of a long for gotten dream, stirred him uneasily as he handled it. The next moment he was knocked down by a violent cuff on the ear, and Mangus o'shea stood over him, his small reddish eyes blazing, ugly with anger, his snarling lips, parted, revealing a broken row of lit tle black teeth, horribly distinct in the middle of his. Book The Women Who Make Our Novels Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Women Who Make Our Novels Classic Reprint written by Grant M. Overton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Women Who Make Our Novels The order in which authors are taken up in the book is accidental and therefore meaningless. The reader is recommended to follow his own inclination in perusing the chapters. They are entirely detached from each other, as are the subjects considered except for an occasional reference, in discussing one, to an other's work. These references, and in fact all the discussions of various books, are to be taken as ex pository and not critical. If a thing is stated to be good, bad or indifferent the statement is made as a statement of fact and not of personal opinion. The justification of this book is the need of it. It is ridiculous that there should be nothing easily ac cessible about such writers as Edith Wharton, Ellen Glasgow, Kathleen Norris, Mary Johnston, Mary S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Women of Champion City HE wind was blowing from the north, not IN T gusts or blasts, but steadily, relentlessly, the way it does when a cold snap starts moving in. The palms along Sun set Shore Road were kowtowing to the south in a most mo notonous fashion. The sky was dull blue, without clouds, and across the road, beyond the grove, the bay fumed into an ugly slate gray. It was not at all the sort of day I would select to begin the Season. My newly arrived guests were sure to be cold and pinched at the nose, muttering at me as though I had personally cheated them. Well, I tried. I hoped hard all summer through the drought and all fall through the hurricanes for a serene and sun-drenched winter. I hadn't quite resigned myself to every innkeeper's eternal frustration from weather and hired help. In this optimistic year I planned to play gra cious hostess; no duties more strenuous than replenishing ice water and breaking out bridge tables. But instead, the north wind blew, the new maid deserted without notice, and the housework fell to my lot. Book Why Women Are So Classic Reprint

Download or read book Why Women Are So Classic Reprint written by Mary Roberts Coolidge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why Women Are So These chapters are neither a defense nor an arraignment of womankind; they are, rather, a first-hand study of the ordinary, orthodox, middle class women who have constituted the domestic type for more than a century; the exotic great lady and the morbid woman with a grievance have alike been omitted. They try to answer the query: why are women so? Is the characteristic be havior which is called feminine an inalienable quality or merely an attitude of mind produced by the coercive social habits of past times?
