Book The Female Advantage

Download or read book The Female Advantage written by Sally Helgesen and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2011-03-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in Currency paperback -- Sally Helgesen's classic study of female leaders and how their strategies represent a highly successful revision of male leadership styles. Sixty thousand copies in print! In her bestselling 1990 book, Sally Helgesen discovered that men and women approach work in fundamentally different ways. Many of these differences hold distinct advantages for women, who excel at running organizations that foster creativity, cooperation, and intuitive decision-making power, necessities for companies of the twenty-first century. Helgesen's findings reveal that organizations run by women do not take the form of the traditional hierarchical pyranaid, but more closely resemble a web, where leaders reach out, not down, to form an interrelating matrix built around a central purpose. The strategy of the web concentrates power at the center by drawing others closer and by creating communities where information sharing is essential. She presents her findings through unique, closely detailed accounts of four successful women business leaders -- Frances Hesselbein of Girl Scouts USA, Barbara Grogan of Western Industrial Contractors, Nancy Badore of Ford Motor Company's Executive Development Center, and Dorothy Brunson of Brunson Communications. Helgesen observes their meetings, listens to their phone calls and conferences, and reads their correspondence. Her "diary studies" document how women leaders make decisions, schedule their days, gather and disperse information, motivate others, delegate tasks, structure their companies, hire, and fire. She chronicles how their experiences as women -- wives, mothers, friends, sisters, daughters -- contribute to their leadership style.

Book Forgotten Engagements

Download or read book Forgotten Engagements written by Angela Kershaw and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is the first to examine the contribution made by women writers to politically committed literature in 1930s France. Its purpose is to bring to light the work of female authors of left-wing fiction whose novels are comparable to those of well-known male practitioners of littérature engagée, such as Paul Nizan and Louis Aragon. It analyses the work of Madeleine Pelletier, Simone Téry, Edith Thomas, Henriette Valet and Louise Weiss in the context of the inter-war models of committed literature in relation to which they were produced. Consideration of this body of fictional texts, not previously brought together by literary historians, shows how women were able to relate to fiction and to politics in inter-war France. Situating the novels within their social, historical, literary and political environment, the book contributes to the literary and cultural history of twentieth century France. The analysis of inter-war political writing by women calls into question the criteria against which women’s writing has been evaluated by feminist scholarship.

Book Voice and Agency

Download or read book Voice and Agency written by Jeni Klugman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent advances in important aspects of the lives of girls and women, pervasive challenges remain. These challenges reflect widespread deprivations and constraints and include epidemic levels of gender-based violence and discriminatory laws and norms that prevent women from owning property, being educated, and making meaningful decisions about their own lives--such as whether and when to marry or have children. These often violate their most basic rights and are magnified and multiplied by poverty and lack of education. This groundbreaking book distills vast data and hundreds of studies to shed new light on deprivations and constraints facing the voice and agency of women and girls worldwide, and on the associated costs for individuals, families, communities, and global development. The volume presents major new findings about the patterns of constraints and overlapping deprivations and focuses on several areas key to women s empowerment: freedom from violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, ownership of land and housing, and voice and collective action. It highlights promising reforms and interventions from around the world and lays out an urgent agenda for governments, civil society, development agencies, and other stakeholders, including a call for greater investment in data and knowledge to benchmark progress.

Book FOLKLORE AND FAIRYTALES OF THE NORTH AMERICAN

Download or read book FOLKLORE AND FAIRYTALES OF THE NORTH AMERICAN written by Various and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2009 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A GREAT READ FOR KIDS! In 1891, the first buffalo was purchased for Golden Gate Park, Congress created the U.S. Courts of Appeals, the first woman was admitted to Yale University, American Express issued the first Travellers Checks, Thomas Edison patented the motion picture camera, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow published The Song of Hiawatha. It was also the year that Folk Lore and Legends of the North American Indianwas first published by J.B. Lippincott. Folk Lore and Legends of the North American Indian is an exquisite compilation of North American Indian myths and legends as they existed in the late 1880s and early 1890s. These are the stories that were passed from mouth to mouth, teaching stories to help young Native Americans navigate through the uncertain journey of life that lay ahead. J.B. Lippincott gathered the stories from letters transported to him via the recently completed Transcontinental Pacific Railroad. These stories should not become just another page in the ever-increasing forest of the internet; they should not be accessible only with the use of electronic devices. All Americans are invited, especially Native Americans, to keep a copy of this sliver of their history in their bookshelves for their children and their children's children to read and treasure for years to come. This book has been especially republished to raise funds for the American Indian Education Fund, benefitting the education of Native Americans across the United States of America.
