A young woman's husband defrauds her of her fortune, her identity and eventually her sanity. She is saved by her sister and a loyal man who loves her, and her two rescuers attempt to expose her husband. They meet a woman dressed all in white whose fate seems curiously intertwined with that of the young woman. In the tradition of the sensation novel, the story contravenes boundaries of class, identity and the private and public spheres.

Book excerpt: As the inscription on his tombstone reveals, Wilkie Collins wanted to be remembered as the “author of The Woman in White,” for it was this novel that secured his reputation during his lifetime. The novel begins with a drawing teacher’s eerie late-night encounter with a mysterious woman in white, and then follows his love for Laura Fairlie, a young woman who is falsely incarcerated in an asylum by her husband, Sir Percival Glyde, and his sinister accomplice, Count Fosco. This edition returns to the original text that galvanized England when it was published in serial form in All the Year Round magazine in 1860. Three different prefaces Collins wrote for the novel, as well as two of his essays on the book’s composition, are reprinted, along with nine illustrations. The appendices include contemporary reviews, along with essays on lunacy, asylums, mesmerism, and the rights of women.

William Wilkie Collins was an English novelist, playwright, and short story writer best remember today for his novels "The Woman in White" (1859), "No Name" (1862), "Armadale" (1866) and "The Moonstone" (1868), considered the first modern English detective novel. "The Woman in White," a mystery novel and perhaps an early example of detective fiction, is considered among the first and the finest novels in the so-called "sensation" genre. It is also an excellent example of Victorian serial novels. Before they appeared in volume form, these novels were first published serialized in installments in magazines such as the well-known "ALL THE YEAR ROUND," a weekly journal curated by Charles Dickens. "The Woman in White" was published in 40 weekly installments. The original publication in "ALL THE YEAR ROUND" did not contain illustrations, but the novel was also published concurrently in the American magazine "Harper's Weekly" in a serialization that included the illustrations by John McLenan later used in the publication in book form.

It is considered to be among the first mystery novels and is widely regarded as one of the first (and finest) in the genre of "sensation novels".The story is sometimes considered an early example of detective fiction with protagonist Walter Hartright employing many of the sleuthing techniques of later private detectives. The use of multiple narrators (including nearly all the principal characters) draws on Collins's legal training, [1][2] and as he points out in his preamble: "the story here presented will be told by more than one pen, as the story of an offence against the laws is told in Court by more than one witness".

Book excerpt: Celebrated as one of the first popular mystery novels in history, The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins skillfully incorporates the twisting and turning of more than a few plot lines that all manage to converge beautifully at the end of the work. Walter Hartright, an art teacher, crosses paths one day with a woman who appears to be distressed, and Walter notices immediately that she is clad in an all white outfit. It is later made known to him that she is from an asylum, and that her name is Anne. The people of the community know her very well. After Walter takes a job at what is known as Limmeridge House, he notices that one of his students - Laura - looks strikingly like the distressed woman he met, Anne, but it is not until later on in the novel that he discovers the reason why.

Book excerpt: This is an annotated version of the book1.contains an updated biography of the author at the end of the book for a better understanding of the text.2.This book has been checked and corrected for spelling errorsThis is the story of what a Woman's patience can endure, and what aMan's resolution can achieve. If the machinery of the Law could be depended on to fathom every caseof suspicion, and to conduct every process of inquiry, with moderateassistance only from the lubricating influences of oil of gold, theevents which fill these pages might have claimed their share of thepublic attention in a Court of Justice. But the Law is still, in certain inevitable cases, the pre-engagedservant of the long purse; and the story is left to be told, for thefirst time, in this place. As the Judge might once have heard it, sothe Reader shall hear it now. No circumstance of importance, from thebeginning to the end of the disclosure, shall be related on hearsayevidence. When the writer of these introductory lines (WalterHartright by name) happens to be more closely connected than otherswith the incidents to be recorded, he will describe them in his ownperson. When his experience fails, he will retire from the position ofnarrator; and his task will be continued, from the point at which hehas left it off, by other persons who can speak to the circumstancesunder notice from their own knowledge, just as clearly and positivelyas he has spoken before them. Thus, the story here presented will be told by more than one pen, asthe story of an offence against the laws is told in Court by more thanone witness--with the same object, in both cases, to present the truthalways in its most direct and most intelligible aspect; and to tracethe course of one complete series of events, by making the persons whohave been most closely connected with them, at each successive stage, relate their own experience, word for word.Let Walter Hartright, teacher of drawing, aged twenty-eight years, beheard first.IIIt was the last day of July. The long hot summer was drawing to aclose; and we, the weary pilgrims of the London pavement, werebeginning to think of the cloud-shadows on the corn-fields, and theautumn breezes on the sea-shore.For my own poor part, the fading summer left me out of health, out ofspirits, and, if the truth must be told, out of money as well. Duringthe past year I had not managed my professional resources as carefullyas usual; and my extravagance now limited me to the prospect ofspending the autumn economically between my mother's cottage atHampstead and my own chambers in town.
