Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950), winner in 1923 of the second annual Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, was a daring, versatile writer whose work includes plays, essays, short stories, songs, and the libretto to an opera that premiered at New York's Metropolitan Opera House to rave reviews. Millay infused new life into traditional poetic forms, bringing new hope to a generation of youth disillusioned by the political and social upheaval of the First World War. She ventured fearlessly beyond familiar poetic subjects to tackle political injustice, social discrimination, and women's sexuality in her poems and prose. In the 1920s and '30s, Millay was considered a spokesperson for personal freedom in America, particularly for women, and we turn to her lines to illuminate the social history of the period and the Bohemian lifestyle she and her friends enjoyed. Yet Millay's poetry is still decisively modern in its message, and it continues to resonate with readers facing personal and moral issues that defy the test of time: romantic love, loss, betrayal, compassion for one another, social equality, patriotism, and the stewardship of the natural world. Collected Poems features Millay's incisive and impassioned lyric poetry and sonnets, many of which are considered among the finest in the language, as well as the poet's last volume, Mine the Harvest, compiled and published in 1956 by her sister Norma Millay.

Book excerpt: The Sufi mystic and poet Jalaluddin Rumi is most beloved for his poems expressing the ecstasies and mysteries of love in all its forms—erotic, platonic, divine—and Coleman Barks presents the best of them in this delightful and inspiring collection. Rendered with freshness, intensity, and beauty as Barks alone can do, these startling and rich poems range from the "wholeness" one experiences with a true lover, to the grief of a lover's loss, and all the states in between: from the madness of sudden love to the shifting of a romance to deep friendship to the immersion in divine love. Rumi, the ultimate poet of love, explores all "the magnificent regions of the heart," and he opens you to the lover within. Coleman Barks has made this medieval, Persian-born (present-day Afghanistan) poetic and spiritual genius the most popular poet in America today. This seductive volume reveals Rumi's charms and depths more than any other.

Book The Wise Old Woman Spirit

Download or read book The Wise Old Woman Spirit written by Susan K. Faron and published by Chiron Publications. This book was released on 2023-11-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open this book and enter the world of eros and, curiously, emptiness—two vital qualities of the Wise Old Woman spirit that can help us survive ... possibly even thrive. Through the human imagination and dreams, the Wise Old Woman spirit offers a kind of collaboration and partnership involving a very real intimacy and immediacy while preserving our conscious gains. Although the Wise Old Woman spirit has appeared with many names and in multiple forms, this discovery is specifically born of Jung’s work on the archetype of the Wise Old Man. The Wise Old Woman spirit has emerged as a wisdom figure of her own in the ground-breaking research Dr. Faron has conducted. Not a goddess, nor worshipped, the feminine wisdom figure is nevertheless divine, born out of each individual psyche—man or woman—and functions as a psychological and individual reality. Featuring Emma Jung as the quintessential example of the Wise Old Woman spirit and enriched by dreams of the Wise Old Woman from around the world, this book provides scholarly, experiential and life-affirming inspiration!

Book excerpt: She trusted her immense intuition and generous heart--and published the most. Ursula Nordstrom, director of Harper's Department of Books for Boys and Girls from 1940 to 1973, was arguably the single most creative force for innovation in children's book publishing in the United States during the twentieth century. Considered an editor of maverick temperament and taste, her unorthodox vision helped create such classics as Goodnight Moon, Charlotte's Web, Where the Wild Things Are, Harold and the Purple Crayon, and The Giving Tree. Leonard S. Marcus has culled an exceptional collection of letters from the HarperCollins archives. The letters included here are representative of the brilliant correspondence that was instrumental in the creation of some of the most beloved books in the world today. Full of wit and humor, they are immensely entertaining, thought-provoking, and moving in their revelation of the devotion and high-voltage intellect of an incomparably gifted editor, mentor, and publishing visionary.Ursula Nordstrom, director of Harper’s Department of Books for Boys and Girls from 1940 to 1973, was arguably the single most creative force for innovation in children’s book publishing in the United States during the twentieth century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastor Martin began his ministry work at Crenshaw Christi an Center in Los Angeles, CA where he was Born Again in 1975. In 1977 his training was completed as a Counselor and in the years that followed, many were counseled in the Word of God, in the area of receiving Christ as savior, receiving the Holy Spirit, Assurance of Salvation and Basic Christian Doctrine. These “mini-teaching sessions were invaluable in providing a foundation of Christian stair steps to maturity.” In 1980 Mr. Martin enrolled at Confi rmed Word Christian Bible College and was first Ordained in 1982 at his home church in Los Angeles: Song of Solomon Ministries. As Associate Pastor and Administrator of The Evangelistic Rescue Ministries, Pastor Marti n was Ordained again in 1987. A wise Evangelist advised me to get Paperwork from several organizations because you never know when you will be in a remote area of the world where people will only honor paperwork from their own, he said. In 1992 Pastor Martin worked with the regional outreach of RTV (Reclaiming the Valley) and as a team member, ordained many who sought training and supervision through RTV, at which point he was ordained again through RTV since their paperwork was recognized in many regions of the world. In the early period of the 1990’s Pastor Martin was elected Chairman of the Local Concerts of Prayer, a worldwide prayer movement with a highly successful branch in Pasadena. Not long after a term as Press coordinator With the March for Jesus (a worldwide march of millions), Pastor Marti n became Chairman of the Board of Harvest-Time Ministries, Inc. in Pasadena, and then Associate Pastor at Grace Community Bible Church. Pastor Martin is also a teacher-on-staff at CBI (Christian Bible Institute), a Bible teaching college with satellite campuses across Los Angeles.

Book Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish

Download or read book Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish written by and published by Library of Tibetan Works and Archives. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great treasures of Buddhist literature, is mDo-mdzangs-blun or the Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish as it is known to the Mongols. The text was translated to Mongolian from Tibetan as the Üliger-ün Dalai or Ocean of Narratives. It is one of the most interesting, enjoyable and readable Buddhist scriptures. For centuries, it has been an inexhaustible source of inspiration, instruction and pleasure for all who have been able to read it. The history of this unusual scripture is still uncertain. Legend has it that the tales were heard in Khotan by Chinese monks, who translated them (but from what language?) into Chinese, from which it was translated into Tibetan, then into Mongolian and Oirat. The Narratives are Jatakas, or rebirth stories, tracing the causes of present tragedy in human lives to events which took place in former lifetimes. The theme of each narrative is the same: the tragedy of the human condition, the reason for this tragedy and the possibility of transcending it. But unlike Greek tragedy, Buddhist tragedy is never an end in itself, i.e. a catharsis, but a call to transcend that which can be transcended and need not be endlessly endured. The people we meet in the Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish, although supposedly living in the India of the Buddha’s time, might also be living at present in New York City, a small rural town or Leningrad, and the problems they face are the same problems that men have had to face always and everywhere. Herein lies the timeless appeal of this profound Buddhist scripture.
