Book The Winter Beach Salvage Camp

Download or read book The Winter Beach Salvage Camp written by Douglas Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 2013-03-26 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the worst maritime disasters in Florida's history occurred in 1715 when the Spanish Plate Fleet, bound for Spain, was trapped in a hurricane that dashed almost all of the ships against the beaches along the central east coast of the state. Spain salvaged what they could for several years before closing down operations. Today, one of the central salvage camp locations from the Spanish effort can be found where Florida has established the McLarty Shipwreck Museum on the beach just south of Sebastian Inlet. The Spaniards constructed several camps along the fifty miles of coast where the ships sank, the primary one being at the McLarty Museum site on the northern extent of the wreckage trail. However, Douglas R. Armstrong located another salvage camp, miles to the south near Wabasso where he performed an archaeological rescue survey in the late 1980's just as the site was being destroyed by homebuilders. "The Winter Beach Salvage Camp" is the report Douglas R. Armstrong prepared for Florida's Bureau of Archaeological Research in regards to his findings at that location, which was occupied by the Spanish during the original salvage operation from 1715 through 1716, as well as by British soldiers later on. The British were undoubtedly "fishing" on the wrecks themselves, looking for treasure. Armstrong's work contains a complete recount of his discoveries, by item, along with photos and maps.As a bonus, this edition also contains the first-ever publication of Douglas Armstrong's 1990 annual report to the state for the Cannon Wreck site, as it was being excavated by Steve Shouppe's group, Galleon Research. This addendum is a photocopy of the daily log sheets, along with the site files and drawings of recovered artifacts. The addendum also contains the site map as prepared by Armstrong along with a rectified section set in geographic grid coordinates suitable for use with GPS receivers.

Book Living with the East Florida Shore

Download or read book Living with the East Florida Shore written by Orrin H. Pilkey and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than one transplanted Floridian has paid $150,000 for a beautiful condominium with a sea view only to learn that, to keep the building from becoming part of the view, considerable additional money must be spent to build and repair seawalls or to pump up new beaches by dredging sand from offshore. Most of Florida's beachfront property lies on narrow strips of sand called barrier islands, which are low in elevation and subject to flooding during storms and hurricanes. Some of the construction is poor, adding to the problems facing homeowners, most whom came from other parts of the country with little awareness of the hazards of beaches. In Living with the East Florida Shore, Orrin H. Pilkey, Jr., of Duke University, along with his co-authors, has described the varied problems that confront the east shore of Florida today.

Book excerpt: A highly illustrated voyage through shipwrecks ancient and contemporary. Out of the Depths explores all aspects of shipwrecks across four thousand years, examining their historical context and significance, showing how shipwrecks can be time capsules, and shedding new light on long-departed societies and civilizations. Alan G. Jamieson not only informs readers of the technological developments over the last sixty years that have made the true appreciation of shipwrecks possible, but he also covers shipwrecks in culture and maritime archaeology, their appeal to treasure hunters, and their environmental impacts. Although shipwrecks have become less common in recent decades, their implications have become more wide-ranging: since the 1960s, foundering supertankers have caused massive environmental disasters, and in 2021, the blocking of the Suez Canal by the giant container ship Ever Given had a serious effect on global trade.

Download or read book The Practical Book of Cobs written by Daniel Sedwick and published by . This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular book has been out of print since 1995 and unavailable for a number of years now, so this [fourth] edition should be a most welcome addition to the market! Greatly expanded from the previous edition (more than 100 pages longer!), this 20th Anniversary Edition contains a long new section on the shipwrecks that have yielded cobs over the years, complete with a foldout map and specified bibliographies for each wreck. Also, the assayer section incorporates the latest research information, with specimen photos of most of the assayers (not separated into a photo section as before). The values in the back, of course, have been updated. What has not changed, however, is the appeal to both beginners and advanced collectors alike, as well as dealers and jewelers who work with cobs. The Practical Book of Cobs offers readers a look at the following topics:Historical background / Elements of design / Market values / Extensive bibliography / Complete ID of mint marks, assayers, and period / How cobs were made and used / Treasure Fleets and other shipwrecks that produced cobs / How to buy and sell, and how to spot counterfeits.
