Book The Laughter of Aphrodite

Download or read book The Laughter of Aphrodite written by Peter Green and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best-selling classicist Peter Green recreates the life and times of the Greek lyric poet Sappho in this beautifully conceived, sharply detailed work of historical imagination. We meet Sappho at the age of fifty, when she is shaken by her fatal and final love affair with Phaon. She narrates her own story from the vantage point of self-questioning middle age, and her candid meditations make intimate, engrossing reading. Only fragments of Sappho's poetry survive. In imagining Sappho's life Green found his task "rather like that of an archaeologist reassembling some amphora from hundreds of shards—of which more than half are missing." Yet, in his synthesis of historical evidence and ebullient invention, Green produces a seamless, moving, and persuasive portrait. He recreates Sappho's life by interweaving her surviving poetry into the narrative, not as quotations, but as her own imagined speeches and thoughts. Sappho's life spanned one of the most exciting periods in Greek history. Green's novel, full of details about daily life on ancient Lesbos, draws the reader into the political and social climate of her world: the civil strife accompanying the transition from aristocracy to mercantilism, the household relations between slave and aristocrat, the details of sea travel in the Aegean. Green wrote the novel while living on Lesbos, and his graceful rendering of the landscape, the rhythms of the seasons, and the varied flora of Sappho's island pervades the narrative. Sappho's poetry reveals a direct, spontaneous woman who eschewed artifice and embellishment. Green's extraordinary talent captures those qualities and brings this woman of unflinching honesty very much to life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is about good people that are done wrong by evil people. But the evil people get what they have coming usually without a Judge or Jury. Karen was driving on a narrow country road. It was late in the fall. It was a cold rain. Soon it was raining harder and she slowed to forty. There wasn’t much traffic on that road so she was OK. Then one came up behind her fast making it hard to see. She wished that one was in front of her instead of behind. Her wish was about to come true however because the driver started around her in a blind curve. Then what was not supposed to happen did. They met a car. As she looked to the left, all she could see was green, a very particular color, a light florescent green, so bright in the evening rain. As the driver floored the dually, trying to get around, she heard it real plain. A hot rod diesel. The driver took her out rather than hit the oncoming car head on. She went down a bank and centered a big oak tree. She ended up down where nobody could see her. She stayed most of the night not knowing weather she will bleed to death or freeze to death. Either way she was going to die. Then two paramedics came just in time before she passes out for the second time. She awoke to find herself on the floor of the ambulance. Then she began to wonder about these paramedics. She remembered smelling beer on one of them. Now she is on the floor They didn’t even strap me to the gurney. Soon she realized there was no gurney, this was no ambulance but a work van. She was laying among power tools, saws, drills and the like. She had to get out of that van, whenever they stop for gas or something . . . . But they didn’t stop. She was with them what ever and where ever.

Book excerpt: Simon de Montfort was a man ahead of his time in the thirteenth century, a disinherited Frenchman who talked his way into an English earldom and marriage with a sister of the English king, Henry III. A charismatic, obstinate leader, Simon soon lost patience with the king's incompetence and inability to keep his word, and found himself the champion of the common people. This is his story, and the story of Henry III, as weak and changeable as Simon was brash and unbending. It is a tale of opposing wills that would eventually clash in a storm of violence and betrayal—an irresistible saga that brings the pages of history completely, provocatively, and magnificently alive.
