Book excerpt: When it comes to the doctrine of the Sabbath, many are confused. Some are so confused that they are asking how many commandments are there, nine or ten? Has the fourth commandment been abrogated or is it still binding? If the fourth commandment stands, then on what day are we to observe the Sabbath, on Saturday or Sunday? Or does it really matter just as long as we take off one day in the week? Others have come to think that all the commandments have been abrogated. Is this true? A more searching question is asked, Is the typical Christian community correct in observing the Sabbath on the first day of the week? Or does the fourth commandment mandate the Sabbath to be observed on seventh day? Still others are asking, is the Sabbath Day and the Lords Day same or are they different? As one can readily see, these questions are troubling to many professing Christians. They are confused as the doctrine of the Sabbath is no longer addressed. However, the more searching question is, if the fourth commandment stands, have we provoked our Lord to anger in failing to observer the Sabbath as we ought? If we are to observe it, then how is the Sabbath to be observed? It is the writers conviction that we are not only to observe the Sabbath, but also until we do, there will be no revival in this country no matter how fervently we may fast and pray. The doctrine of the Sabbath is essential to the life of the church and the liberties we once enjoy as a nation before it was infected with this liberation theology. We must heed the divine mandate coming down from God to Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it Holy (Exodus 20:8).

Book excerpt: Joey Pipa takes an authoritative look at the "first day"--The one set aside by the church for worship. This is an area of church practice in which we find liberal interpretations practiced by evangelical churches and vice versa, often without too much thought involved and an emphasis upon what "feels" right. Many of these issues are considered unclear, optional, divisive, with the unhealthy result that we tend to avoid the subject altogether. Are we missing out on God's blessing by the way we celebrate the Lord's Day -- are we too legalistic, too lax? Is the Spirit grieved by our disrespect to God or frustrated by our thralldom to unnecessary restrictions? These and other questions are answered in The Lord's Day. - Publisher.

Book excerpt: Why was the Sabbath Day ordained? What is its meaning for the New Testament believer? How important is a proper understanding of this command, and what are the dangers of misunderstanding it? How does the fourth commandment relate particularly to fathers, mothers, and families? What is its application for magistrates and the civil realm?Whether it's a question of worship and the Church or a matter of whether a business establishment should remain open or closed on Sunday, the fourth commandment is a law surrounded by debate, disagreement, and misunderstanding. Remember the Sabbath Day boldly addresses these and numerous other contemporary issues by bringing to the table the matured wisdom and Biblical understanding of the Christian giants of a previous century.Often referred to as "the Guardian of the Faith" and "the Foundation of Christianity," the Sabbath Day and the fourth commandment has stood as a bulwark of the Faith for millennia. Within this work Swiss Reformer Pierre Viret and his contemporary John Calvin delve into the true meaning and blessings of God's command for a Day of Rest. Offering often-overlooked insights into the purpose of this command, the reader will find that their intensely practical and astonishingly applicable writings provide a solid Biblical foundation for those seeking a better understanding of the wisdom, treasure, and responsibility of the fourth commandment.

Book A Continental View Johannes Cocceius s Federal Theology of the Sabbath

Download or read book A Continental View Johannes Cocceius s Federal Theology of the Sabbath written by Casey B. Carmichael and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carmichael argues that Johannes Cocceius's theology of the Sabbath serves as a window through which one can view more clearly his federal theology or covenant theology. Covenant theology was the most distinctive feature of his theology. Moreover, Cocceius spent a notable portion of his life engaging in the Leiden Sabbath Controversies from 1655 to 1659, which played a key role in the split of the Reformed Dutch Republic into two socio-political blocs—Cocceians and Voetians. So far scholars have tended to overlook this critical phase in Cocceius's theological development. Carmichael sheds light on it by looking at the theological texts that Cocceius wrote that absorbed his attention during this significant period. Casey Carmichael examines first the evolution of the problem of the Sabbath in Cocceius's theological tradition—Reformed Orthodoxy—in Chapters 2–4 and second the development of Cocceius's doctrine of the Sabbath, structured around the Leiden Sabbath Controversies, in Chapters 5–8.
