Download or read book Opening the Ozarks written by Walter A. Schroeder and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the oldest European settlement in Missouri, Ste. Genevieve was the funnel through which the eastern Ozarks (the 5,000 square miles beyond Ste. Genevieve's location on the Mississippi) was established. A magisterial account of the settlement of this area from 1760 through 1830, Opening the Ozarks focuses on the acquisition and occupation of land, the transformation of the environment, the creation of cohesive settlements, and the building of neighborhoods and eventually organized counties. The study begins with the French Creole settlement at Old Ste. Genevieve in the middle of the eighteenth century. It describes the movement of the French into the Ozark hills during the rest of that century and continues with that of the American immigrants into Upper Louisiana after 1796, ending with the Americanization of the district after the Louisiana Purchase. Walter Schroeder examines the cultural transition from a French society, operating under a Spanish administration, to an American society in which French, Indians, and Africans formed minorities.

Book The Ozarks

    Book Details:
  • Author : Vance Randolph
  • Publisher : University of Arkansas Press
  • Release : 2017-01-25
  • ISBN : 1682260267
  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book The Ozarks written by Vance Randolph and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2017-01-25 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Vance Randolph was perfectly constituted for his role as the chronicler of Ozark folkways. As a self-described "hack writer," who first visited the region as a child with his middle-class parents, he was as much a figure of the margins as his chosen subjects. And his essentially romantic identification with the Ozarks--encouraged by the editors of the era--was always tempered by his scientific training and his contrarian nature. In The Ozarks, originally published in 1931, we have Randolph's first book-length portrait of the people he would spend the next half-century studying. The full range of Randolph's interests--in language, in hunting and fishing, in folksongs and play parties, in moonshining--is on view in this book that made his name; forever after he was "Mr. Ozark," the region's preeminent expert who would, in collection after collection, enlarge and deepen his debut effort. With a new introduction by Robert Cochran, The Ozarks , an image shaper in its day, a cultural artifact for decades to come, this wonderful book is as entertaining as ever." --Back cover.

Book The Shawnee Indians

Download or read book The Shawnee Indians written by Randolph Noe and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of years of painstaking research, this outstanding compilation reflects the wealth of material available on the Shawnee, from contact through the 20th century. The historical introduction provides a succinct but comprehensive narrative of Shawnee history. The bibliography itself is arranged in three broad subject areas. The first covers general history and affairs, anthropology, and linguistics; the second moves through history with the Shawnee, providing easy access to materials that document and analyze each period of their history; and the third references a plethora of primary documents-judicial, administrative, and Congressional material not generally found in existing guides. This latter section lends a particular strength to the work with its annotations of the Annual Reports of the Commissioners of Indian Affairs, which give unparalleled views of Shawnee life in the 19th century. Although intended primarily as a guide to the literature, the entries are generous in scope and description and often contain quotations from the primary sources. Intended for historians, anthropologists, researchers, and students, both graduate and undergraduate.
