Book The Whirlpool That Produced China

Download or read book The Whirlpool That Produced China written by Zhao Tingyang and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Whirlpool That Produced China, Tingyang Zhao offers a philosophical interpretation of China's historicity, explaining how the expansion of China was not due to the lures of expansionist behavior but to the offerings of the surrounding contenders as they were constantly being pulled into a whirlpool of growth and amalgamation. The peoples surrounding China on all four sides sought to win the greatest material benefits and greatest spiritual resources by shaping their ways of thinking and living around the evolving core culture of the central plains. Zhao also investigates how the tianxia vision of world order was able to dissolve the fierce currents of contention and create out of them the inclusive model of many cultures and many peoples with many forms of governance. He explains these reasons for why China became China by weaving together ontology with game theory methodology: the "stag hunt." Ultimately, Zhao addresses the question of how ancient China became such an irresistible attraction—a stag—to its vital periphery that once a population and territory was drawn into the game, or the whirlpool, it was difficult if not impossible to withdraw.

Book excerpt: The anonymous narrator in Alf MacLochlainn's?"Out of Focus"?has more than blurred vision when he looks at the world around him as he recuperates from his many minor accidents. His visual perception or skewed perspective is a working out of the author's theory taken from William Molyneux's statement in 1692 "that an object may be seen in two places yet not seen double." / Whether he is on his bed looking through the crystal of his watch, or in a hospital bathtub peering into the overflow opening, or sitting on a chaise lounge with an empty barrel of a ballpoint pen or ring from a beer can to his eye, or back in his bed looking through a gauze bandage, this very accident-prone hero/victim manages to see inside what appears to be real-life scenes going on outside. / And when he is not playing the voyeur, his mind runs on zany inventions (natural/non-natural bust supports and shot-proof crystal eye protectors, for example) and pseudo-pedantic discussions about optics, clocks and cycling designs. / Although everything about this novel is original--plot, style, illustrations--it tips its hat in passing to some of those who have gone before: Beckett's Malone Dies and Molloy, and the narrators of "At Swim-Two-Birds" and "Cadenza."

Book Redefining A Philosophy for World Governance

Download or read book Redefining A Philosophy for World Governance written by Tingyang Zhao and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Key Concepts pivot discusses the contemporary relevance of the ancient Chinese concept of Tianxia or ‘All-Under-Heaven’ and argues the case for a new global political philosophy. ‘All-under-heaven’ is a conceptualization of the world as the composition of three realms: the physical, psychological and political, which places inclusivity and harmony at the heart of a global world view above other considerations, transcending the notion of nation state. In a highly interconnected and globalized world, the idea of Tianxia can offer a new 21st century vision of international relations and world order, based on a harmonized global organization defined by the “all-inclusiveness principle.” Promoting the ontology of co-existence and relational rationality hand in hand with rational risk aversion in a globalized world, this pivot makes the case that Tianxia could offer a new vision for contemporary world order, redefining the universality and legitimacy of politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this succinct yet ample work, Zhao Tingyang as one of China's most distinguished and respected intellectuals, provides a profoundly original philosophical interpretation of China's story. Over the past few decades, the question "where did China come from?" has absorbed the thoughts of many of China's best historians. Zhao, keenly aware of the persistent and pernicious asymmetry in the prevailing way scholars have gone about theorizing China according to Western concepts and categories, has tasked both Chinese and Western scholars alike to "rethink China." To this end, Zhao introduces what he terms a distinctively Chinese centripetal "whirlpool" model of world order to interpret the historical progression of China's "All-Under-Heaven" Tianxia identity construction on the central plain of China. In this book, Zhao forwards a novel and compelling thesis on not only how we should understand China, but also until recently, how China has understood itself"--

Book Good Grief Using the Grief Sheet to Improve Community Theatre Production

Download or read book Good Grief Using the Grief Sheet to Improve Community Theatre Production written by Kenneth Anderson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good Grief! Using the Grief Sheet to Improve Community Theatre Production was written to encourage theatre directors to take advantage of the benefits involved in a daily written critique of amateur play rehearsals. In over 40 years of directing community and school productions, as well as acting for other directors, I have yet to meet a director who employs this technique. I don't know why this is so, except that it does require a large investment in time. Typically, the directors I have known wrote grief notes and then assembled cast and crew to convey them verbally. Obviously, much time is wasted following this method since everyone has to listen whether or not they are specifically involved. Furthermore, the published grief sheet provides the perceived need for instruction as well as a record to return to, to refresh the memory in regard to the needed improvements, which often are forgotten otherwise. The Grief Sheet is also a team builder, and the team concept is an essential quality of a successful theatre company. In writing this book, my collections of grief sheets have enabled me to relive some exciting and memorable productions.
