Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio and Her Western Reserve: With a Story of Three States; Leading to the Latter, From Connecticut, by Way of Wyoming, Its Indian Wars and Massacre The theme of these pages is twofold: a duality of endeavors, exhibiting a contrast of means, and yet reaching a community of outcome. Ohio - now arrived at the centennial of statehood - was resultant from the forgathering of a great number of diverse fragments finally compacted and fused in a homogenous whole by various causes. As the most composite State in the Union, it was formed by the concentrated march of an army of occupation from all of the States. These elements, widely variant as they were, had one principle in common - an inherent conviction of the righteousness of freedom, which led some to dictate, and all to assent to, a basic law against the extension of slavery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects essays and documents from a wide selection of sources--many now out of print and difficult to locate--to provide a highly readable story of the settlement and development of the "New Connecticut" region of Ohio. Four divisions in the book logically organize the social, economic, and political study of the region: "Conquest and Settlement: Native Americans to New Englanders"; "The Pioneers: Town Building, Society, and the Emergence of an Economy"; "The Transition Years; Slavery, the Civil War, and the Reserve in National Politics, 1850-1880"; and "A Changing Legacy: Industrialism, Ethnicity, and the Age of Reform." The volume ends in 1920, when the unique features of the Western Reserve of Ohio--the architecture, the landmarks, the New England lifestyle--had largely faded into American history as a result of industrialism, urbanism, and the pressure of a changing ethnic base.

Johnson was the Son of Daniel and Elizabeth (crabtree) Johnson. His father and mother were natives of Allegheny county, Maryland, where they were married and resided for some years and where an elder brother and sister of the subject of this sketch were born. They came to Ohio in 1802, before Ohio had arrived at the dignity of statehood, the father driving a wagon conveying their scanty belongings and the mother traveling on horseback with the children over the moun tains of West Virginia, then still a part of the Old Dominion. It was before the days of bridges, and they forded the Ohio river, the young mother performing this feat on horse back with a child in her arms. Tradition says that she crossed the Ohio three times in this manner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
