As a resource that opens up for the first time one of the richest fields of translation in the British context, this bibliography is also a pioneering Welsh contribution to the burgeoning academic field of translation studies. The Centre for Research into the English Literature and Language of Wales (CREW), directed by Professor M. Wynn Thomas, received a prestitgious research grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Board for a one-year project in 2001 that was to culminate in a web-based database, an international conference and this published volume. S. Rhian Reynolds was employed as the postdoctoral research officer for the project, which grew far beyond the expected lifespan due to the wealth and quantity of the material uncovered. Translation practice has encompased the whole wealth of Welsh-language literature and among the thousands of translations recorded here are the acknowledged classics of European culture---The Mabinogion, the work of Dafydd ap Gwilym, the hymns of William Williams Pantycelyn and the plays, fiction, and political writings of Saunders Lewis. Ever since Welsh-English translation was first instigated in the eighteenth century it has provided an invaluable interface between Wales and the wider world (even non-anglophone cultures usually discover Welsh-language literature through the medium of English), between Wales and the other countries of the British Isles and (most importantly of all, perhaps) between the two cultures of Wales itself.

A medieval Welsh translation of the first book of the Latin encyclopedia known as Imago Mundi, written by Honorius Augustodunensis in the first quarter of the twelfth century, this text is a fine example of the ties between the intellectual world of Europe and Wales in the late-twelfth/early-thirteenth centuries, when the text was translated, ties that brought across the scientific knowledge based on Roman and late antique sources. Structured according to the four elements: earth, water, air and fire, the text presents geographical, anthropological, and astronomical information, often with historical and mythological contexts. The present edition follows that organizational principle, providing a glimpse into the medieval understanding of the overarching structure of the universe. The text is presented in its historical and literary context, with an updated account of its transmission. A commentary on the scientific context of the most interesting passages is provided, as well as a linguistic one. The edition also provides an overview of the variants by printing parallel texts based on all surviving medieval manuscript witnesses for a number of selected chapters. This includes sections of two previously unpublished medieval witnesses of the text. The accompanying glossary includes vocabulary from all extracts included in the edition.

She next draws upon a range of manuscript and published sources to trace a circular tour of the country, unpicking moments of cultural entanglement and revealing how travel-writing shaped understanding of Wales and Welshness within the wider British polity. Wales became a popular destination for visitors following the publication of Thomas Pennant's Tours in Wales in the late 1770s. Hundreds of travel-accounts from the period are extant, yet few (particularly those by women) have been studied in depth. Wales proves, in these narratives, as much a place of disturbance as a picturesque haven--a potent mixture of medieval past and industrial present, exposed down its west coast to the threat of invasion during the Napoleonic Wars. From castles to copper-mines, Constantine explores the full potential of tour writing as an idiosyncratic genre at the interface of literature and history, arguing for its vital importance to broader cultural and environmental studies.
