Book Many Blessings

Download or read book Many Blessings written by Weedn Sonnee and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Blessings: A Tapestry of Accomplished African American Women by Sonnee Weedn, Ph.D. Ten years ago, Marin County psychologist, Dr. Sonnee Weedn, was asked to treat a young, urban, African American woman. Believing that as a white woman living in the reality of de facto segregation, she was not knowledgeable enough to treat this woman in psychotherapy, she set about to learn more about African American culture. This stimulated her thinking about African American women. What was it that allowed them to survive and thrive despite the double prejudice of racism and sexism. She wondered about the historical implications of the confluence of the Civil Rights Movement and the Women's Movement on this particular cohort of women, most who had come of age during law-enforced segregation. She traveled the country for three years, interviewing many African American women, some famous and others unknown except in their own particular circles of influence. She studied these women to determine what encouraged them to transcend discrimination and other obstacles they faced in order to rise up and claim their destinies as powerful and altruistic women. Ultimately, she chose thirty-one of the women she interviewed to represent the seven strengths she identified as having sustained them and allowed them to flourish. She believes that these seven strengths are the historical legacy of all African American women today, and encourages all women, regardless of ethnicity to learn from their example to increase their own resilience and determination.

Download or read book Blessings from the Dust written by Thomas Jones and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas and Betty Jones grew up in the coal mining camps of southwest Virginia, a dusty, barren place where people had to work hard just to survive. Both their fathers were coal miners, as were many of the early African-American men who came to Wise County from the deep south beginning in the early 1920s. After their marriage they left the area, but fate soon brought them back. A series of difficult, but well thought out decisions led Betty to work underground in the mines for nearly 20 years and Thomas to give up a promising broadcasting career to be a full-time father. They also decided to raise their seven children in the same place they were raised, but in a very specific way. The result was all seven going off to college and their two boys, Thomas Quinn and Julius, becoming running backs in the National Football League. Blessings From the Dust is the story of two determined parents and their struggle to raise their children successfully in the barren and deprived coal mining region of southwest Virginia. It is a saga of family, place, hard work, sacrifice, determination, education and ultimately love. When Thomas and Betty Jones made a conscious decision to raise their growing family in the coal-mining towns of Big Stone Gap and Appalachia they knew they'd have their work cut out for them. That's because their goal was to have all seven children go to college and then make their marks away from Wise County. How they did it and the sacrifices they made - such as Betty working underground in the coal mines for nearly 20 years - is detailed with honesty and candor. Although this is a memoir of one African-American family, it is really an American success story, as well.

Book The Blessing and Losses We Share

Download or read book The Blessing and Losses We Share written by Nailah Abdus-Salaam and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death reminds us that life is short and it is not infinite. Any joy experienced throughout life, is not contingent on things going your way or having no losses, no disappointments or no (more) deaths. We must be grateful for all we have, and all we have been given from our Lord, even if it is for a brief time. The losses and blessings we share are the fabric of life. To love deeply is one of life’s most profound gifts, and the loss of a loved one is one of life’s most profound tragedies. Being happy doesn’t mean we won't experience grief or sadness. We must be grateful to Allah despite such loss, knowing that “ALLAH DOES NOT BURDEN A SOUL BEYOND THAT IT CAN BEAR” (2:286)
