Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using language with elements of the medieval tales which were his models, Morris tells the story of Ralph of Upmeads, the fourth and youngest son of a minor king, who sets out, contrary to his parents' wishes, to find knightly adventure and seek the Well at the World's End, a magic well which will confer a near-immortality and strengthened destiny on those who drink from it.Although the novel is relatively obscure by today's standards it has had a significant influence on many notable fantasy authors. C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien both seem to have found inspiration in The Well at the World's End: ancient tables of stone, a "King Peter", a quick, white horse named "Silverfax", and a character named "Gandalf" are only a few, to say nothing of Ralph's journey home as denouement, anticipating the Hobbits' return and battle for the Shire.

Book excerpt: This vintage book contains the first volume of William Morris's 1896 novel, "The Well at the World's End". It is a fantasy novel that, along with Morris's other work, "The Wood Beyond the World" (1894), inspired the writings of J. R. R. Tolkien. It is the story of Ralph of Upmeads, a son of a king who sets out, against his parents' desires, to seek out the fabled "Well at the World's End", a magical well that will give those who drink of it godlike powers. An enthralling and masterfully-written tale of fantasy and adventure, "The Well at the World's End" is highly recommended for fans of the genre, and it is not to be missed by collectors of Morris's work. William Morris (1834 - 1896) was an English poet, novelist, translator, and activist. Many texts such as this are increasingly hard to come by and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Ralph wins a kiss from a lovely damsel at Bourton Abbas. In the Wood Perilous, Ralph frees a captive maiden whom he thinks of as the Lady of the Wildwood. After further adventures, Ralph takes refuge in the House of Abundance, a keep ruled, he hears, by the fair Lady of Abundance. Riding away, Ralph encounters two knights fighting over the Lady of the Wildwood. He battles the Knight of the Sun and is overpowered, but his life is spared at the request of the Lady. As the knight sleeps, the Lady draws Ralph away, tells him she is the Lady of Abundance, and gives herself to him. They live briefly in bliss, but the Knight of the Sun appears, slays her, and is in turn killed by Ralph. Ralph continues his quest.
