Book excerpt: A computer program has been developed for use in fitting an equation of state to large bodies of pressure-density-temperature (P-[rho]-T) data for oxygen and nitrogen using linear least squares stepwise regression. The stepwise multiple regression procedure is a refinement of the least squares method which allows the elimination of highly correlated terms from the functional form and provides for an optimal representation by the sequential selection of terms on the basis of the magnitude of the correlation coefficient of the fit to measured data. The least squares problem and methods of weighting data for use in least squares fitting are discussed briefly. The work described is part of a continuing research program in the development of thermodynamic equations of state. Although the methods have been applied to the development of equations of state for oxygen and nitrogen, they have more general applicability.

Book excerpt: This report outlines the methods for correlating thermodynamic property data currently used by personnel at the Center for Applied Thermodynamic Studies (CATS) and documents procedures for using three software packages written for MS-DOS computers to aid the development of thermodynamic equations of state. These new fitting packages are based on three different least-squares algorithms which were originally developed for mainframe computer systems by De Reuck and Armstrong, McCarty, and Rose. Revising the original Fortran computer code for these mainframe packages to compile on MS-DOS microcomputers, and testing the resulting microcomputer software were the primary objectives of this work. Common data input, weighting, and comparison routines were adopted for all three packages during the revision process. Listings of the Fortran source code for the main programs and their supporting subroutines and functions are included in the appendices of this report.
