Boston was at that time only a small town, and there were not many stores. As Benjamin ran down toward the busy part of the street, he wondered what he should buy. Should he buy candy or toys? It was situated on the west banks of the Merrimack and Pemigewasset rivers. Opposite its eastern boundry this last named river united with the Winnipesaukee and formed the Merrimack. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from True to His Home: A Tale of the Boyhood of Franklin It may please the reader to know that Mr. Calamity was suggested by a. Real character, and that the incidents in the life of Jenny, Franklin's favorite sister, are true in spirit and largely in detail. It would have been more artistic to have had Franklin discover Uncle Benjamin's pamphlets later in life, but this would have been, while allowable, un historic fiction. Says one of the greatest critics ever born in America, in speaking of the humble birth of Franklin: That little baby, humbly cradled, has turned out to be the greatest man that America ever bore in her bosom or set eyes upon. Beyond all question, as I think, Benjamin Franklin had the largest mind that has shone on this side of the sea, widest in its comprehension, most deep - looking, thoughtful, far-seeing, the most original and creative child of the New World. Book Scenes From the Life of Benjamin Franklin Classic Reprint

Download or read book Scenes From the Life of Benjamin Franklin Classic Reprint written by Louis A. Holman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes From the Life of Benjamin Franklin After leaving school, where he made a pitiable showing in mathematics, he worked as his father's assistant in the tallow - candle business for about two years. Then, at the mature age of twelve, he signed apprentice indentures with his brother James, who was editor and publisher of The New England Courant, America's fourth newspaper. James showed himself jealous and thrifty rather than brotherly in his relations with, perhaps, the most valuable apprentice that master printer ever had; while the boy, on his part, was im pertinent, wise beyond his years, and thoroughly convinced of his own importance. It was not an enviable situation for either brother. Finally, when he had served his brother about two-thirds of the specified time, the apprentice in no very dignified manner brought the affair to an abrupt end by running away. Although Boston had had her son Franklin in her keeping less than eighteen years, she nourished him and made him what he was. She was, indeed, his alma mater, and when he left her the formative period of his life was past, and he went forth, with all his virtues and his faults, a mature man in everything but years. This was in 1723, a decade before Washington was born. Thus, while the first sovereign of the House of Brunswick was struggling to pronounce in English the names of his new possessions, a runaway 'prentice boy of His Majesty's colony of Massachusetts Bay was already developing into a leader of the men who were to wrest from the king's great-grandson a large share of the royal dominion. Book Secondary Lessons Or the Improved Reader

Download or read book Secondary Lessons Or the Improved Reader written by Samuel Willard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secondary Lessons, or the Improved Reader: Intended as a Sequel to the Franklin Primer It is the Opinion of some, who have speculated much on the subject, and who are entitled to great respect, that reading should commence with the pronunciation of sentences, while spelling is made a subsequent busi ness. That this theory is incomparably better than that, which has come down from our fathers, and which has hitherto controlled our raetics, there is perhaps no reasonable doubt. But til it is proved by thorough experiments, the author must be allowed to believe that there is an intermediate course far better than either. For him it is hard to conceive, how the child is to arrive at such a ready distinction of one word from another, as even tolerable reading must require, with out meeting and surmounting the principal labors and difficulties of spelling. To distinguish cat from rat, for instance, he must observe the diversity of the letters c and r in the two words to distinguish eat from ate, he must observe the different arrangements of the letters; that is, he must spell mentally, if he does not do it orally. Beside, it is too evident from experience, that it is a very tedious thing even for those, who have an ordinary degree of acquaintance with the orthography of words, to read their first exercises in composition; and that those who have read volumes and libraries, without first learning to spell, are generally bad 8 llers and bad readers through the whole of their lives, owever much they may excel in information, or natural understand mg. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Booker Prize The real-life Guinness heiress offers an inside look at the lives of eccentric aristocrats in this “masterful . . . macabre fairy-tale and blackly humorous family portrait” (Literary Hub). This macabre, mordantly funny, partly auto-biographical novel reveals the gothic craziness behind the scenes in the great houses of the aristocracy, as witnessed through the unsparing eyes of an orphaned teenage girl. Great Granny Webster herself is a fabulous monster, the chilliest of matriarchs, presiding with steely self-regard over a landscape of ruined lives. Great Granny Webster is Caroline Blackwood’s masterpiece. Heiress to the Guinness fortune, Blackwood was celebrated as a great beauty and dazzling raconteur long before she made her name as a strikingly original writer.
