Book excerpt: IT HAD TURNED OUT TO BE A VERY POWERFUL STORM AFTER ALL... This amazingly talented South African weaverbird encounters challenges he never imagined. Tahir finds his way to the acacia tree and sits under it, listening to the heartbreaking sounds coming from the birds. Teary eyed, he surveys the damage one last time, before flying off into the night. The special colored twigs he once held in his hand, were now left behind, lying under the acacia tree as he flew off into the dark. After flying aimlessly through the night, Tahir lands on a nearby patch of Savanna trees, housing a colony of weaverbirds. In the bright sunshine, he listens to the playful chatter of the young birds. What a stark contrast from what he left behind. The Weaverbirds is an imaginative, whimsical and adventurous fantasy of love, loss, toxic relationships and natural disasters. The animated adventure journeys to the home of Tahir who loses his storm wrecked home, but yet learns to triumph over tragedy as he navigates his way through challenges along his path. He learns to conquer his fear, remorse and guilt instead of running from his problems. It's going to take the overcoming of many obstacles along his way to restore his family and attain the love he longs for, the beautiful Zarah. The love triangle Tahir becomes entangled in proves to be another difficulty he must deal with and overcome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CONQUER COMPREHENSION WORKBOOK 6 is designed for students to practise and work on answering the different types of comprehension questions found in the multiple-choice and open-ended formats. The passages are carefully graded into three levels: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced. The main objective of the Basic level is to lay the foundation to build up a student’s confidence in tackling comprehension. In the Intermediate level, the passages encourage higher-level thinking and understanding. The Advanced level challenges a student to think beyond the ideas presented in the passages. The wide variety of themes and genres also serve to widen a student’s exposure to the different text types which are currently taught in schools. The different questioning techniques aim to develop a student’s comprehension and inference skills. Thinking questions are incorporated to allow a student to exercise his opinions and make his conclusions. A glossary is included after every exercise to help students comprehend the passage better. It also increases a student’s vocabulary and will aid in other writing, reading and comprehension exercises. These varied and useful exercises should give a student greater confidence when doing comprehension tests.

Book excerpt: "Concoction of ideologies imperative in three-sixty-degree dimensions of human existence and its connection with the supreme." Many questions of the modern era are seeking answers from vague sources and we should be proud that our ancestors have answered them thousands of years ago. The warrior sage Vishvamitra, the founder of Gayatri Mantra, one of the most powerful mantras of Hindus, dedicated himself to a mission of piercing the darkness caused by misinterpretation of Dharma by the revolutionary outlook for its eternal sustenance. Written in the format of a novel, Yogi Vishvamitra is a nectar of philosophies conceived by the ancient Hindu sages who dedicated their lives to innovating a universal way of life that would lay a foundation of human civilisation precisely called Dharma. The sages are represented by Vishvamitra whose expedition was to hand over this priceless legacy to an eligible heir (found in the crown prince of Ayodhya, Rama) whose life becomes a bible of how an ideal human being should be. Yogi Vishvamitra is a manual of humanity, sociology, philosophy, liberation, spirituality, religion, and evolution. It is an attempt to navigate the upcoming generations towards their roots and reinforce the values that are forever useful. We aim to make them aware of their rich cultural heritage and adapt this precious knowledge into the times to come for a brighter future globally.

Book excerpt: Avian Biology, Volume III is a collection of articles that deals with the biology of birds such as their peripheral endocrine glands and reproductive system. One paper describes the avian reproductive system where physiological mechanisms that regulate gametogenesis get synchronized from stimuli in the environment, thus ensuring that the young are born at the appropriate season. Another paper correlates the morphology of the pituitary cells with the functions of the pituitary from physiological and chemical analyses. A couple of papers describes the peripheral endocrine glands and the process of neuroendocrinology that includes detailed analyses of the neurosecretory system anatomy and the ependymal function in the median eminence composed of the anterior and posterior divisions. One author describes the structure and refraction of avian vision, as well as the probable determination of visual pigments in the eye cones through in situ microspectrophotometry. The book then analyzes bird behavior through functional groups of bird activities. Bird enthusiasts, zoologists, and avian biologists will find this book interesting and informative.

Book Cuckoos Cowbirds and Other Cheats

Download or read book Cuckoos Cowbirds and Other Cheats written by Nick Davies and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating study describes the natural histories of these brood parasites and examines many of the exciting questions they raise about the evolution of cheating and the arms race between parasites and their prey. Brood parasites fill their armoury with adaptations including exquisite egg mimicry, rapid laying, ejection of host eggs, murder of host young, chick mimicry and manipulative begging behaviour: ploys shown by recent research to have evolved in response to host defence behaviour or through competition among the parasites themselves. While many host species appear defenceless, accepting parasite eggs quite unlike their own, many are more discriminating against odd-looking eggs and some have evolved the ability to discriminate against odd-looking chicks as well. How is this arms race conducted? Will defenceless hosts develop defences in time, or are there constraints which limit the evolution and perfection of host defences? And why are so few species obliged only to lay eggs in host nests? Have host defences limited the success of brood parasitism, or is it in fact much more common than we suspect, but occurring mainly when birds parasitize the nest of their own kind? All of these puzzles are examined in descriptions of the natural history of each of the groups of parasites in turn. Here is a book with wide appeal, both to amateur naturalists fascinated by this most singular and macabre of behaviours and by ornithologists and ecologists interested in the evolution of ecology and behaviour. The story takes us from the classic field work by pioneer ornithologists such as Edgar Chance, Stuart Baker, Herbert Friedmann and others, through to the experimental field work and molecular techniques of today's leading scientists. We visit brood parasites in Europe, Asia, Japan, Africa, Australasia, and North and South America, to look at some of the world's most interesting birds and some of biology's most interesting questions, many of which still beg answers from ornithologists in the future. Brilliant illustrations by David Quinn illuminate the species discussed, showing many behaviours never before illustrated and conveying the thrill of watching these astonishing birds in the wild.

Book Biology of the Ubiquitous House Sparrow

Download or read book Biology of the Ubiquitous House Sparrow written by Ted R. Anderson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-08-10 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the chicken, the House Sparrow is the most widely distributed bird species in the world, occurring on all continents except Antarctica and on most human-inhabited islands. Although its Latin name is Passer domesticus, it is certainly not domesticated. In fact, it is widely regarded as a pest species and is consequently not protected in most of its extensive range. This combination of ubiquity and minimal legal protection has contributed to its wide use in studies by avian biologists throughout the world. The purpose of this book is to review and summarize the results of these global studies on House Sparrows, and to provide a springboard for future studies on the species. House Sparrows have been used to study natural selection in introduced species, circadian rhythms, and the neuroendocrine control of the avian annual cycle. One current question of considerable interest concerns the catastrophic House Sparrow population declines in several urban centers in Europe. Is the House Sparrow a contemporary canary in the mine? Other topics of broad interest include the reproductive and flock-foraging strategies of sparrows, and sexual selection and the function of the male badge in the species. Anderson also explores the role of the House Sparrow in disease transmission to humans and their domesticated animals.
