Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A haunting and theatrical one-woman play, The Way She Spoke travels from a New York stage to the treacherous streets of Juárez, Mexico, where thousands of women have been murdered in an epidemic of violence that has yet to stop. Written by Isaac Gómez based on his intimate interviews, the play is a raw and riveting exploration of responsibility: one playwright's journey to give voice to a city of women silenced by violence, fear and a world that has turned a deaf ear to their stories. "An act of bearing witness... an aching, outraged work of vigil, protest and inquiry." - The New York Times "Isaac Gomez has drawn from interviews with real women to expose just how terrifying life in Juárez has become. It is riveting theater... Gomez's script is a brilliant, tragic book of the dead." - New York Theatre Guide "At first, the terrific solo show The Way She Spoke seems simple... Gomez's play picks its way carefully among genres: It's half memoir, half fiction, half documentary, half memorial. That's too many halves-there's too much play here. But that's because there is no appropriate response other than surfeit of anguish, of pity, of rage." - TimeOut NY

I might love them, but I' m not stupid enough to think that means a happily-ever-after. Absolute power has twisted and corrupted every other person who has wielded it, so can anyone be trusted with it? Even if we succeed, if we can overcome Hubis, if we get everything we want, will that power end up destroying me? If I' m going to make one last mistake, I might as well make it one to remember...

Book excerpt: Thank God for Jesus I am in His glorious light, I now know, no matter what he will not leave nor forsake me. This book chosen by my father in heaven for me to write before I was born has shown me that God knows what I would go through and what we would go through as a family. Because of His mercy and love he never let me know or we could not bear it. God started this work in our family, I do believe he will finish it. Even though it may not seem like it right now the battle is already won, when we go through the test, the testimony is for the glory of God. I write what I live and live what I write. I am astonished by Gods power, as God strengthen me I am humbled by His grace and mercy. Amen. I was born in Jamaica and have Scottish and English heritage which I embrace. I am a wife, mother and grandmother. I have lived in England for most of my life. In my youth, I wondered what was the true purpose for my life? I had repeated dreams and visions that were so profound, about my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, running with a host of people to meet him on the mountainside. I have lived a Christian life believing there is a God for many years. I have been born again about 20 years the greatest thing that ever happened in my life. I believe God has blessed me in so many different ways, I thank God for my husband and family. I thank God for wisdom, I believe he has given me, understanding and discernment. I await the final chapter the Lord said it will be a good one.

Book German Diasporic Experiences

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-published with the Waterloo Centre for German Studies For centuries, large numbers of German-speaking people have emigrated from settlements in Europe to other countries and continents. In German Diasporic Experiences: Identity, Migration, and Loss, more than forty international contributors describe and discuss aspects of the history, language, and culture of these migrant groups, individuals, and their descendants. Part I focuses on identity, with essays exploring the connections among language, politics, and the construction of histories—national, familial, and personal—in German-speaking diasporic communities around the world. Part II deals with migration, examining such issues as German migrants in postwar Britain, German refugees and forced migration, and the immigrant as a fictional character, among others. Part III examines the idea of loss in diasporic experience with essays on nationalization, language change or loss, and the reshaping of cultural identity. Essays are revised versions of papers presented at an international conference held at the University of Waterloo in August 2006, organized by the Waterloo Centre for German Studies, and reflect the multidisciplinarity and the global perspective of this field of study.

Book What Is God

Download or read book What Is God written by Jacob Needleman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-12-24 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his most deeply personal work, religious scholar Needleman cuts a clear path through today?s clamorous debates over the existence of God, illuminating an entirely new way of approaching the question of how to understand a higher power. I n this new book, philosopher Jacob Needleman? whose voice and ideas have done so much to open the West to esoteric and Eastern religious ideas in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries?intimately considers humanity?s most vital question: What is God? Needleman begins by taking us more than a half century into the past, to his own experience as a brilliant, promising, Ivyeducated student of philosophy?atheistic, existential, and unwilling to blindly accept childish religiosity. But an unsettling meeting with the venerated Zen teacher D. T. Suzuki, combined with the sudden need to accept a dreary position teaching the philosophy of religion, forced the young academician to look more closely at the religious ideas he had once thought dead. Within traditional religious texts the scholar discovered a core of esoteric and philosophical ideas, more mature and challenging than anything he had ever associated with Judaism, Christianity, and the religions of the East. At the same time, Needleman came to realize?as he shares with the reader?that ideas and words are not enough. Ideas and words, no matter how profound, cannot prevent hatred, arrogance, and ultimate despair, and cannot prevent our individual lives from descending into violence and illusion. And with this insight, Needleman begins to open the reader to a new kind of understanding: The inner realization that in order to lead the lives we were intended for, the very nature of human experience must change, including the very structure of our perception and indeed the very structure of our minds. In What Is God?, Needleman draws us closer to the meaning and nature of this needed change?and shows how our present confusion about the purpose of religion and the concept of God reflects a widespread psychological starvation for this specific quality of thought and experience. In rich and varied detail, the book describes this inner experience?and how almost all of us, atheists and ?believers? alike, actually have been visited by it, but without understanding what it means and why the intentional cultivation of this quality of experience is necessary for the fullness of our existence.
