Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Water Highways of the Interior of Africa: With Notes on Slave Hunting and the Means of Its Suppression With Maps The Council of the Philosophical Society of Glasgow having in contemplation the formation of a Geographical and Ethnological Section suggested my reading a Paper bearing on these departments of Science. The great problems of African geography which have just been solved, with somo notice of tho ethnological problems on which we aro now entering, presented to my mind a suitable subject. If, in a general and introductory form, this Paper paves the way for the scientific treatment of these subjects by others at future meetings of the Society, I shall feel that my object has been attained. The subject is at present of intense public intercat. While I have not heeitetod to direct attention to questions of practical bearing and importance, I have endeavoured to do bo by the statement of facta which are within the sphere of a Philosophical Society. By tho titlo of this paper I wish to indicate that my object is not entirely scientific. My purpose is to show what use can be made of the water systems of Central Africa; and so far my remarks will be of the nature of what the Germans call Commercial Geography. The map I exhibited of Eaat Africa was the part completed of the great map of Equatorial Africa, now in preparation by Mr. E. G. Ravcnstein for the Royal Geographical Society. The scale of this is about 16 miles to an inch. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: World Strategic Highways provides a detailed examination of approximately 50 of the most important strategic highways in the world. These highways may take the form of roads, railways, rivers and canals, or air and sea routes. They have one thing in common: they are of special significance because, throughout history, they have acted as major trade routes for a number of countries; have military or strategic significance; act to bind a country or countries together; or, in the case of rivers, act as boundaries between two or more countries. They include the Suez and Panama canals, the Rhine and Amazon rivers, the Trans-US Railway, the Khyber Pass and Maputo Corridor, the Silk Road, the Cape sea route and the Pacific sea route. Location maps are provided throughout the book.

Book The Daring Heart of David Livingstone

Download or read book The Daring Heart of David Livingstone written by Jay Milbrandt and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The captivating, untold story of the great explorer, David Livingstone: his abiding faith and his heroic efforts to end the African slave trade Saint? Missionary? Scientist? Explorer? The titles given to David Livingstone since his death are varied enough to seem dubious—and with good reason. In view of the confessions in his own journals, saint is out of the question. Even missionary is tenuous, considering he made only one convert. And despite his fame as a scientist and explorer, Livingstone left his most indelible mark on Africa in an arena few have previously examined: slavery. His impact on abolishing what he called “this awful slave-trade” has been shockingly overlooked as the centerpiece of his African mission. Until now. The Daring Heart of David Livingstone tells his story from the beginning of his time in Africa to the publicity stunt that saved millions after his death.
