Book The Vertical Farm

Download or read book The Vertical Farm written by Dickson Despommier and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The vertical farm is a world-changing innovation whose time has come. Dickson Despommier's visionary book provides a blueprint for securing the world's food supply and at the same time solving one of the gravest environmental crises facing us today."--Sting Imagine a world where every town has their own local food source, grown in the safest way possible, where no drop of water or particle of light is wasted, and where a simple elevator ride can transport you to nature's grocery store - imagine the world of the vertical farm. When Columbia professor Dickson Despommier set out to solve America's food, water, and energy crises, he didn't just think big - he thought up. Despommier's stroke of genius, the vertical farm, has excited scientists, architects, and politicians around the globe. Now, in this groundbreaking book, Despommier explains how the vertical farm will have an incredible impact on changing the face of this planet for future generations. Despommier takes readers on an incredible journey inside the vertical farm, buildings filled with fruits and vegetables that will provide local food sources for entire cities. Vertical farms will allow us to: - Grow food 24 hours a day, 365 days a year - Protect crops from unpredictable and harmful weather - Re-use water collected from the indoor environment - Provide jobs for residents - Eliminate use of pesticides, fertilizers, or herbicides - Drastically reduce dependence on fossil fuels - Prevent crop loss due to shipping or storage - Stop agricultural runoff Vertical farms can be built in abandoned buildings and on deserted lots, transforming our cities into urban landscapes which will provide fresh food grown and harvested just around the corner. Possibly the most important aspect of vertical farms is that they can built by nations with little or no arable land, transforming nations which are currently unable to farm into top food producers. In the tradition of the bestselling The World Without Us, The Vertical Farm is a completely original landmark work destined to become an instant classic.

Download or read book Inorganic Plant Nutrition written by A. Läuchli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book bearing the title of this volume, Inorganic Plant Nutrition, was written by D. R. HOAGLAND of the University of California at Berkeley. As indicated by its extended title, Lectures on the Inorganic Nutrition of Plants, it is a collection of lectures - the JOHN M. PRATHER lectures, which he was invited in 1942 to give. at Harvard University and presented there between April 10 and 23 of that year - 41 years before the publication of the present volume. They were not "originally intended for publication" but fortunately HOAGLAND was persuaded to publish them; the book appeared in 1944. It might at first blush seem inappropriate to draw comparisons between a book embodying a set of lectures by a single author and an encyclopedic volume with no less than 37 contributors. But HOAGLAND'S book was a compre hensive account of the state of this science in his time, as the present volume is for ours. It was then still possible for one person, at least for a person of HOAGLAND'S intellectual breadth and catholicity of interests, to encompass many major areas of the entire field, from the soil substrate to the metabolic roles of nitrogen, potassium, and other nutrients, and from basic scientific topics to the application of plant nutritional research in solving problems encountered in the field.

Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction If you start a discussion on hydroponics with a person who is a keen and an avid gardener, he is going to say in a very blasé tone, “Oh yeah, you are talking about a gardening method which you are not going to use any soil at all. In fact, you are going to be growing your plants in water.” And he is going to be so right. Hydroponics is that gardening method, in which you are going to grow your plants in lots of water. This gardening method is normally implemented in places where the soil is not fertile enough to sustain plant life. I, being a practical doomsayer, predict that within the next 50 years plants are going to be grown extensively through hydroponics because we will have poisoned all the soil, with our chemicals, by then. The idea of hydroponics is not something new. I would not be surprised if in ancient times plants were grown in water, especially in places where one wanted to grow plants indoors – especially in palaces. By the way, a couple of years ago, archaeologists who were doing a little bit of digging in Egypt found some Lotus and water Lily seeds going back more than 2,000 years ago, in some pond excavations in a palace in ancient Egypt. Out of the 20 buried seeds found, which were sent to Kew Gardens London, three of them germinated, and so we have 2,000-year-old lilies, whose ancestors were collected by Egyptian princesses. The princesses in the palace collected the lotuses every day in the ponds and use them for religious rituals as well as adorning their rooms and persons. I do not think they went bathing in the scented waters, because they must have been really careful about the muddy and dirty waters, especially with natural organic fertilizers put in them to promote the growth of the plants.
