Book The Water Relation Between Plant and Soil Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Water Relation Between Plant and Soil Classic Reprint written by Burton Edward Livingston and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Water-Relation Between Plant and Soil The work of Dixon and his colleagues, and that of Renner, of Overton, and others have at length placed upon what appears to be a rational physical basis the long-vexed question of the dynamics of the ascent of water in plants, and recent studies of the relation of the evaporating power of the air and that of sunshine to plant transpiration have made it possible at least to begin to consider the problems of the aerial water relation of plants as involving measurable forces or powers. Our knowledge of the subterranean water-relation of plants remains, however, in an exceedingly primitive condition, although the a priori analysis of the problem here involved may be carried forward beyond the ability of present methods to furnish experimental data. Livingston has insisted that the power of the soil to deliver water to root surfaces is the prime external condition determining the moisture supply to plants in non-saline and non-toxic soils, and the same writer has emphasized the need of some adequate method for determining this water-supplying power of the soil. Book Principles of Soil and Plant Water Relations

Download or read book Principles of Soil and Plant Water Relations written by M.B. Kirkham and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-07-13 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Soil and Plant Water Relations, Third Edition describes the fundamental principles of soil and water relationships in relation to water storage in soil and water uptake by plants. The book explains why it is important to know about soil-plant-water relations, with subsequent chapters providing the definition of all physical units and the SI system and dealing with the structure of water and its special properties. Final sections explain the structure of plants and the mechanisms behind their interrelationships, especially the mechanism of water uptake and water flow within plants and how to assess parameters. All chapters begin with a brief paragraph about why the topic is important and include all formulas necessary to calculate respective parameters. This third edition includes a new chapter on water relations of plants and soils in space as well as textbook problems and answers. Covers plant anatomy, an essential component to understanding soil and plant water relations includes problems and answers to help students apply key concepts Provides the biography of the scientist whose principles are discussed in the chapter

Download or read book Water Plants written by Agnes Arber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Plants: A Study of Aquatic Angiosperms Aquatic Angiosperms are derived from terrestrial ancestors, and have adopted the water habit at various times subsequent to their first appearance as Flowering Plants. The hydrophytes thus present the great advantage to the student, that they form a group for whose history there is a generally accepted foundation. Throughout the present study I have constantly borne phylogenetic questions in mind, and the first three Parts Of this book may be regarded as a clearing Of the ground for the more theoretic considerations concerning the evolutionary history Of water plants to which the Fourth Part is mainly devoted. In that section Of the book, and sporadically in the earlier chapters, I have set down such Speculations as have been borne in upon me in the course Of a study Of water plants with which I have been occupied more or less continuously for the last ten years. The literature relating to Aquatic Angiosperms has now grown to such formidable proportions that I have felt the necessity Of trying to provide some clue to the labyrinth. With this end in view I have given a bibliography Of the principal sources, which includes a brief indication Of the nature and scope Of each work, with page numbers showing where it is cited in the text. For the convenience Of those seeking informa tion about any particular plant, I have indexed the families and genera named in the titles enumerated, and in the notes regard ing the contents Of each memoir. -i found it impracticable to compile a subject index to the bibliography, but the references under the individual chapters to some extent serve this purpose.
