Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six years after debuting the legendary horror movie magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland, Warren Publications suddenly took the comics world by storm in 1965 by releasing Creepy #1 before a stunned, delighted - and terrified - audience. Filled with compelling tales of terror exquisitely illustrated by many of the best artists of the day, the magazine proved to be the tip of an iceberg of horror as Warren Publishing went on to produce some of the finest comic-book stories in the history of the form. In the pages of Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella, Blazing Combat, and many other mags, readers discovered extraordinary artists and writers coming together to create extraordinary work. Then, in 1983, the company just suddenly disappeared ... In 1999, Comic Book Artist magazine published the most comprehensive history of the oft-neglected company to date in its Eisner Award-winning fourth issue. But, until now, the riveting story of Warren Publishing was incomplete. In addition to reprinting the contents of CBA #4, this volume contains many new interviews, features, articles, and the most comprehensive and exhaustive checklist ever compiled on Warren Publishing's incredible output.

Book Happiness Is Not My Companion

Download or read book Happiness Is Not My Companion written by David M. Jordan and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-28 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The valorous but troubled career of the Civil War general best known for defending Little Round Top and averting a Union defeat at Gettysburg. The lieutenant colonel of a New York regiment and rising star in the Army of the Potomac, Gouverneur K. Warren performed heroically at Gettysburg. For his service at Bristoe Station and Mine Run, he was awarded command of the Fifth Corps for the 1864 Virginia campaign. But Warren’s peculiarities of temperament and personality put a cloud over his service at the Wilderness and Spotsylvania and cost him the confidence of his superiors, Grant and Meade. He was summarily relieved of his command by Philip Sheridan after winning the Battle of Five Forks, just eight days before Appomattox. Warren continued as an engineer of distinction in the Army after the war, but he was determined to clear his name before a board of inquiry, which conducted an exhaustive investigation into the battle, Warren’s conduct, and Sheridan’s arbitrary action. However, the findings of the court vindicating Warren were not made public until shortly after his death. For this major biography of Gouverneur Warren, David M. Jordan utilizes Warren’s own voluminous collection of letters, papers, orders, and other items saved by his family, as well as the letters and writings of such contemporaries as his aide and brother-in-law Washington Roebling, Andrew Humphreys, Winfield Hancock, George Gordon Meade, and Ulysses S. Grant. Jordan presents a vivid account of the life and times of a complex military figure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of highly original narrative poems is written in the voice of frontiersman Daniel Boone and captures all the beauty and struggle of nascent America. We follow the progression of Daniel Boone's life, a life led in war and in the wilderness, and see the birth of a new nation. We track the bountiful animals and the great, undisturbed rivers. We stand beside Boone as he buries his brother, then his wife, and finds comfort in his friendship with a slave named Derry. Praised for his originality, Maurice Manning is an exciting new voice in American poetry. The darkest place I've ever been did not require a name. It seemed to be a gathering place for the lint of the world. The bottom of a hollow beneath two ridges, sunk like a stone. The water was surely old, the dregs of some ancient sea, but purified by time, like a man made better by his years, his old hurts absorbed into his soul, his losses like a spring in his breast. -from "Born Again"
