Book The Greek War of Independence

Download or read book The Greek War of Independence written by David Brewer and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “fresh and compelling” study sheds light on the dramatic military, political, and cultural forces that led Greece to liberation in the 19th century (Wall Street Journal). In The Greek War of Independence, Oxford scholar David Brewer presents a vividly detailed and comprehensive study of one of history’s most heroic and bloody struggles for independence. This was the revolution of the Romantic Age, inspiring painters, poets, and patriots the world over, fired as much by Lord Byron's ringing words and Delacroix's brilliant paintings as by Greece's seemingly hopeless plight. For nearly four hundred years, the Ottoman Turks governed Greece, subjecting the country to crushing and arbitrary tax burdens and its peasants to serfdom. The glories of the ancient past were gone, and under Turkish rule Greece was poor and backward. But inspired by the examples of the American and French revolutions, Napoleon's victories, and the Latin American wars of liberation, the Greek people rose up against their Turkish masters in 1821. Over the course of twelve brutal years—a time of terrible violence and bloody massacre—the Greeks and the foreign volunteers who flocked to their cause fought until independence was won in 1833.

Book That Greece Might Yet Be Free

Download or read book That Greece Might Yet Be Free written by W. Alison Phillips and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of the modern Greek nation The fifteenth century brought about the destruction of the Roman Empire of the East when the Ottoman Turks, under the sickle moon banner and the fervour of Islam, finally broke through the walls of Constantinople in 1453. With the establishment of Istanbul as the centre of Ottoman power astride the Bosphorus, the Turks could confidently look back to Asia for all they had achieved, and westwards towards Europe for all that could be won. The tide of Ottoman invasion ultimately turned at the walls of Vienna in 1683, but before and after that reverse there were several Christian nations which were held in Turkish thrall for centuries. None felt the heel of oppression and occupation more keenly than Greece. No country, so different in culture and religion stood closer to Turkey. No people had born its shackles longer and or had fostered such a deep abiding enmity. By the early 19th century the Ottoman Empire was in decline and the movement for a reclaimed Greek nationalism saw its opportunity and rose in armed revolt. The ensuing conflict was a predictably bitter and bloody affair, which saw one of the most significant naval engagements of the age at Navarino. This special Leonaur edition contains a detailed history of the war which led to Greek victory, together with an essay specifically about the Battle of Navarino. Also included are images and maps which did not accompany original versions of the texts. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book The War of Greek Independence

Download or read book The War of Greek Independence written by W. Alison Phillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War of Greek Independence This little book makes no pretence to be the result of original research, nor does it aspire to compete with the more elaborate works which have already appeared on the same subject. In offering it to the public, my aim has been to make more generally accessible a chapter of modern history which recent events have invested with a new interest; and I am not without hope that the following pages may be of some use in helping those, who have no time or opportunity for an extended study of the Greek question, to form a clearer judgment upon the matters at issue. For the materials on which this volume is based I am mainly indebted to Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's * Geschichte Griechenlands,' &c. (vols. XV. and xx. of C. Biedermann's 'Staatengeschichte der neuesten Zeit'), Finlay's 'History of the Greek Revolution' (2 vols. 1861), Gordon's 'History of the Greek Revolution' (2 vols. 1832), and Prokesch-Osten's 'Geschichte des Abfalls der Griechen vom Türkischen Reich.' Baron von Prokesch-Osten's work is interesting as an elaborate and able apology for Prince Mettemich's Eastern policy. Book Greece the Hidden Centuries

Download or read book Greece the Hidden Centuries written by David Brewer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost four hundred years, between the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and the Greek War of Independence, the history of Greece is shrouded in mystery: distorted by Greek writers and largely neglected by others. What was life really like for the Greeks under Ottoman rule? Was it a period of exploitation and enslavement for the Greeks until they were finally able to rise up against Turkish rule, as is the traditional, Greek nationalistic view? Or did the Greeks derive some benefit from Turkish rule? How did the Greeks and Turks co-exist for so long? And, why are Greek attitudes towards Venice, who also controlled much of Greece for many of these years, so different? In this wide-ranging yet concise history David Brewer explodes many of the myths about Turkish rule of Greece. He places the Greek story in its wider, international context and casts fresh light on the dynamics of power not only between Greeks and Ottomans but also between Muslims and Christians, both Orthodox and Catholic, throughout Europe. This absorbing and riveting account of a crucial period will ensure that the history of Greece under Turkish rule is no longer hidden. It will delight anyone with an interest in Greek and Turkish history and in how the past has shaped the Greece we know today.
