Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of Industrial Readjustment in the United States, Vol. 15 The accompanying report on Industrial Readjustment in the United States aims simply to define the problem, not to solve it. On issues so broad, so fundamental, and so intimately related to individual experience and conviction there must inevitably be wide differences of opinion. A clear statement of the questions involved should tend to narrow these differences and promote efforts to reach sound conclusions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Reconstruction: A Symposium on the Situation After the War This book contains the results of an inquiry recently undertaken to ascertain the opinions held by a large number of distinguished public persons on one of the greatest, if not the greatest, of the problems this country must face after the War. I refer to the problem of the industrial situation. The questions were as follows; (1) What in your opinion will be the industrial situation after the War as regards (a) Labour; (b) Capital; (c) the Nation as a single commercial entity? (2) What in your view is the best policy to be pursued by (a) Labour; (b) Capital; (c) the State? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Which did not always need formal expression, was effective in upholding public order and morality. This sentiment had its sources chiefly in home life and training. In the in uence of religion, and in the traditions of ancestral character and public spirit, and of honorable service of pub lic interests, which were transmitted in families from gener ation to generation. The war developed in uences which seriously impaired the vitality of local self-government and of the moral and social guardianship of public order and honor. The most potent factor in this evil change was the new thirst and passion for wealth which appeared amid the morbid conditions of the life of the people after the great con ict. Under the in uence of this all-absorbing ambition the moral administration of the local communities was to a great extent abandoned, and it has never been resumed. Multitudes of citizens, relinquishing the warfare against dis order into which all true men are born, devoted their pow ers wholly to the acquisition of wealth, and this pursuit soon became a mad struggle for success and pre-eminence which produced unwholesome intellectual and social condi tions still everywhere prominent in the national character and life. Here was the source and birth of American socialism. It is the fashion to assert that socialism in this country is of foreign origin, and this notion is a comfort to many persons, but the socialism which is most vital and dynamic among us to-day is the growth of our own soil. It had its origin in the changes in thought, feeling and action produced by the rise of an over-mastering desire for wealth which has weakened all properly social motives and e brts, diminished civic patriotism, and in a great measure destroyed the sense of a Spiritual and moral community. With the decline of the life and e iciency of the local com. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Towards Industrial Freedom Although the following papers were mostly written before the Great War broke out, yet it will be noticed that the consciousness runs through them of a great irnpending crisis and transforma tion of our social arrangements, both in this country and in Western Europe. It may not have been clear at that time exactly how that crisis would come about but now that the War is on us we can see how inevitable in a sense it has been, and how this deadly strife of nations has flowed (in the main) from the hopeless falsity of the social and industrial conditions prevailing in the countries concerned - the falsity of undemo cratic societies divided into classes whose chief object in life was to prey upon each other the falsity of a so-called social order which ignored the rights of women; and the falsity of an in dustrial system whose real object was not public welfare but private gain, not the production of goods for use but the exploitation of labor for. Book War Time Strikes and Their Adjustment Classic Reprint

Download or read book War Time Strikes and Their Adjustment Classic Reprint written by Alexander M. Bing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War-Time Strikes and Their Adjustment The writer has endeavored in the following pages to give as complete an account as space and available material will allow of the labor difficulties which occurred during the war and of the machinery which was created to adjust them. It has, of course, been impossible to deal with every one of the thousands of strikes which took place - even controversies of considerable size and importance had to be omitted - nor has any attempt been made to thoroughly cover the events of the post-armistice period. But inasmuch as most of the labor difficulties after the signing of the armistice were directly connected with those which took place during the war itself, it was considered desirable to include some of these later occurrences as far as such a course was practicable. Download or read book Industrial Peace 1921 Vol 9 Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Peace, 1921, Vol. 9 Tits reluctance of private employers and the employing departments of municipalities to submit their demands for wages reductions to arbitration has excited considerable comment. And not a little adverse criticism. It is held that during the war and the transitional period which followed the armistice. Organised labour, at that time strong and aware of its strength. Consented to the settlement of its claims by the Committee on Production and the Industrial Court of Arbitration which followed it. It is therefore but right (we are told) that now, when the tide has turned and the economic power of labour has been enormously reduced, the employers should agree to the determination of wage changes by a similar impartial tribunal. But an examination of the facts of the case will show that the analogy is false. And that in refusing to employ the method of arbitration employers are by no means inconsistent. It is not, indeed. Too much to say that they are but pursuing the policy which organised labour itself approves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Industrial Army The modern advances made in physical science have been enormous. Economic and sociological science has lagged. The social equilibrium has been destroyed. The vital relations of our social organization are strained. The conflict between capital and labor is bitter. The very principles of our government are but on trial. Will they endure the strain? The new phases of industrialism, under actual sociological conditions, tend to minimize the individual, and to throw an undue proportion of the increased wealth into the hands of the few at the expense of the many. The percentage of hopeless, and often blameless, poverty is increasing. Moral and physical degradation and crime follow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War, Peace and Reconstruction We of America have been spared the horrors that have come upon the people of Belgium, France, Russia, Servia, Rumania, Poland and even England and Germany; but while we face a different situation, and our problems may not be as acute. Still the readjustment that must take place in the United States after the end of the war will be fraught with very grave peril to the Nation and will call for the highest statesmanship. The President. His advisers and others, with the good of the country at heart. Have given and are giving very earnest thought to the future. Secretary of the Interior Lane is plan ning to ask legislation by which the arid lands of the West, the cut-over lands of the Northwest and the swamp lands of the Middle West and South can be reclaimed, and the returned sol dier, sailor and war industry worker be given a preferred status in the allotment upon easy terms, with the opportunity to assist in the construction of irrigation projects and so on, thus being paid for his labor while developing his farm. Much of this land is in private ownership, and non-productive at the present time, from a variety of causes. Legislation not only upon the part of the Federal Government will be required, but also by the states. Before the plan in view can be put into full execution. Cooperation will be necessary between Washington, the states and individual owners of land. And in addition, there are the more fertile acres held in great tracts by wealthy owners, and uncultivated. Will this be tolerated further in the face of a crisis? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Years Among the Working-Classes: In the United States During the War I have been induced to bring this book before the public, that the working-classes of the United Kingdom may have the experience and opinion of one of their own order upon the condition of the people of the United States of America. I have endeavoured to give a true account of the industrial, social, moral, and political state of the people, the circum stances which influence their conduct, and the relation their condition bears to the same classes in Europe. It may be thought that some of my pictures of men and things in the New World are exaggerations; I beg; however, to say that, in my humble Opinion, exaggeration of either the people or the country, even by a professional romancist, would be next to an impossibility!
