Download or read book The Wandering Jew Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Eugène Sue and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wandering Jew, Vol. 1 of 3 The Arctic Ocean is encircled by a belt of eternal ice, the desert boundaries of Siberia and of Northern America - the extreme limits of the two worlds are separated by the narrow Straits of Behring. The month of September is just at its close. The equinox comes in with darkness and the northern storms - night will soon displace one of the short and dull days of the poles. The sky, of a dark violet colour, is feebly lighted by a sun which is without heat, whose white disc, scarcely seen above the horizon, turns pale before the dazzling brightness of the snow which covers and conceals the vast steppes. To the north, this desert is bounded by a coast bristling with black and gigantic rocks. At the foot of their Titanic piles lies, motionless, the vast ocean, with its ice-bound waves, extended chains of frozen mountains, whose blue-tinted peaks are lost from view in a mass of snowy vapour. To the east, between the two peaks of Cape Oulikine, the eastern confine of Siberia, there is visible a line of darkish green, whence slowly creep forth numerous white and glassy icebergs. It is Behring's Straits. Beyond it, and towering above it, are the vast granitic masses of the Cape de Galles, the extreme point of North America. These desolate latitudes belong no more to the habitable world; their piercing and fierce cold rends the very stones, cleaves the trees, and bursts the ground, which groans in producing the germs of its icy herbage. No human being would seem endued with power to dare the solitude of these regions of frost and tempest - of famine and of death. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wandering Jew, Vol. 3 of 3 And now, for the third time in five centuries, I reach the summit of one of the hills that overlook the city. And perhaps I again bring with me fear, desolation, and death. Yet this city, intoxicated with the sounds of its joys and its nocturnal revelries, does not know Oh! Does not know that I am at its gates. But no, no! My presence will not be a new calamity. The Lord, in his impenetrable Views, has hitherto led me through France so as to avoid the humblest hamlet; and the sound of the funeral knell has not accompanied my passage. And, moreover, the specter has left me - the green, livid Specter, with its hollow, blood shot eves. When I touched the soil of France, its damp and icy hand was no longer clasped in mine - and it disappeared. Remembering how a mob had treated her when she had been arrested in the streets only the day before, by mistake, the poor workgirl's fears may be imagined when she was now surrounded by the revelers against her will, But, spite of all her efforts - very feeble, alas - she could not stir a step for the band of merry-makers, newly arriving, had rushed in among the others, shoving some of them aside, pushing far into the mass, and sweeping Mother Bunch - who was in their way - clear over to the crowd around the public-house. This book was released on 2016-07-13 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tarry Thou Till I Come, or Salathiel, the Wandering Jew, Vol. 1 It is believed that no book now before the public can be made nearly so helpful as this one in interesting the minds of readers, young and old, in the events that closely followed in Palestine the Crucifixion, and marked the con ict between early Judaism and Christianity, and ended in the final destruction of Jerusalem. The reader will now and then be reminded of some of the more striking passages in two or three of the popular religious novels published in the past decade. But, as it is not given even to great geniuses to remember forward, our author will scarcely be exposed to the accusation of having borrowed from these later writers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wandering Jew, Vol. 2 of 5 Within one hour after the different scenes which have just been described, the most profound silence reigned in the sol dier's humble dwelling. A ickering light, which played through two panes of glass in a door, betrayed that Mother Bunch had not yet gone to sleep; for her gloomy recess, without air or light, was impenetrable to the rays of day, except by this door, opening upon a narrow and oh scure passage connected with the roof. A sorry bed, a table, an old portmanteau, and a chair, so nearly filled this chilling abode that two persons could not possibly be seated within it, unless one of them sat upon the side of the bed. The splendours now gathered around a triumphant Christ conceal from many the face of the Changeling really there. But children, fools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wandering Jew: And Other Poems Most of these poems are juvenilia; otherwise the harp of Peace might have appropriately become a trumpet of War. Canada is so phenomenally a nation of verse writers, as witness the records of the civil service and other Governmental asylums, that only one with the soul of a slave would make apology for turning the innocence of blank paper into the finality of a printed book.
