Book excerpt: "The Village Watchtower" is a collection of glimpses of rural American life at the turn of the twentieth century. One story is about Lucinda Bascome, an elderly woman who sits at her window watching all that happens in the village. She would be lonely, except that people come to her for gossip. Her house and her window are set up in such a way that she sees everything that goes on in the village. Another glimpse is of Tom, a young wild boy who prefers to live in the wilderness than in the shelter of a house. All the stories are set in the same small town. And each glimpse is based on Wiggin's experiences in a small American town. Kate Douglas Wiggin was the author of the famed "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm," She was also an advocate in early education and created the kindergarten school in which most American children go to in the modern era.

Book The Village Watch Tower Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Village Watch Tower Classic Reprint written by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Village Watch-Tower Dear Old Apple-Tree, Wider whose gnarled branches these stories were written, to you I dedicate the book. My head was so close to you, who can tell from whence the thoughts came? I only know that when all the other trees in the orchard were barren, there were always stories to be found under your branches, and so it is our joint book, dear apple-tree. Your pink blossoms have fallen on the page as I wrote; your ruddy fruit has dropped into my lap; the sunshine streamed through your leaves and tipped my pencil with gold. The birds singing in your boughs may have lent a sweet note here and there; and do you remember the day when the gentle shower came? We just curled the closer, and you and I and the shy all cried together while we wrote "The Fore-Room Rug." It should be a lovely book, dear apple-tree, but alas! it is not altogether that, because lam not so simple as yon, and because I have strayed farther away from the heart of Mother Nature. Book excerpt: From the author of Live from Medicine Park, a powerful coming-of-age novel. Set against the closing years of the Cold War, Constance Squires's debut novel introduces the family of Army Major Collins, as told through the eyes of Lucinda Collins-the vibrant, headstrong eldest daughter. Living on a military base, Lucinda feels displaced and isolated. Over time she finds her own tribe through rock and roll, and meets fellow Army brats, GIs, a ghost, and Syd, who knows how it goes. But after her father's final shocking betrayal, the only world she's ever believed in falls in like the Berlin Wall, leaving Lucinda to chart a new path. In spare, heart-wrenchingly beautiful prose, Squires offers us a rare glimpse into the experiences and sacrifices of an American military family. Along the Watchtower is a powerful story that reveals what it really means to fight for the things we believe in and to defend the ones we love.

Book The Village in Antiquity and the Rise of Early Christianity

Download or read book The Village in Antiquity and the Rise of Early Christianity written by Alan Cadwallader and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete geographical and thematic overview of the village in an antiquity and its role in the rise of Christianity. The volume begins with a “state-of-question” introduction by Thomas Robinson, assessing the interrelation of the village and city with the rise of early Christianity. Alan Cadwallader then articulates a methodology for future New Testament studies on this topic, employing a series of case studies to illustrate the methodological issues raised. From there contributors explore three areas of village life in different geographical areas, by means of a series of studies, written by experts in each discipline. They discuss the ancient near east (Egypt and Israel), mainland and Isthmian Greece, Asia Minor, and the Italian Peninsula. This geographic focus sheds light upon the villages associated with the biblical cities (Israel; Corinth; Galatia; Ephesus; Philippi; Thessalonica; Rome), including potential insights into the rural nature of the churches located there. A final section of thematic studies explores central issues of local village life (indigenous and imperial cults, funerary culture, and agricultural and economic life).

Book Terrestrial Ecosystems and Biodiversity

Download or read book Terrestrial Ecosystems and Biodiversity written by Yeqiao Wang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authored by world-class scientists and scholars, The Handbook of Natural Resources, Second Edition, is an excellent reference for understanding the consequences of changing natural resources to the degradation of ecological integrity and the sustainability of life. Based on the content of the bestselling and CHOICE-awarded Encyclopedia of Natural Resources, this new edition demonstrates the major challenges that the society is facing for the sustainability of all well-being on the planet Earth. The experience, evidence, methods, and models used in studying natural resources are presented in six stand-alone volumes, arranged along the main systems of land, water, and air. It reviews state-of-the-art knowledge, highlights advances made in different areas, and provides guidance for the appropriate use of remote sensing and geospatial data with field-based measurements in the study of natural resources. Volume 1, Terrestrial Ecosystems and Biodiversity, provides fundamental information on terrestrial ecosystems, approaches to monitoring, and impacts of climate change on natural vegetation and forests. New to this edition are discussions on biodiversity conservation, gross and net primary production, soil microbiology, land surface phenology, and decision support systems. This volume demonstrates the key processes, methods, and models used through many case studies from around the world. Written in an easy-to-reference manner, The Handbook of Natural Resources, Second Edition, as individual volumes or as a complete set, is an essential reading for anyone looking for a deeper understanding of the science and management of natural resources. Public and private libraries, educational and research institutions, scientists, scholars, and resource managers will benefit enormously from this set. Individual volumes and chapters can also be used in a wide variety of both graduate and undergraduate courses in environmental science and natural science at different levels and disciplines, such as biology, geography, earth system science, and ecology.
