Book The Victories of the Martyrs

Download or read book The Victories of the Martyrs written by Saint Alphonsus de Liguori and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no doubt that the martyrs are indebted for their crown to the power of the grace which they received from Jesus Christ; for he it is that gave them the strength to despise all the promises and all the threats of tyrants, and to endure all the torments till they had made an entire sacrifice of their lives. So that all their merits, as St. Augustine writes, were the effects of the grace that God in his mercy imparted to them. But it is also certain, and even of faith, that on their part the martyrs co-operated with the grace which enabled them to obtain their victory. Innovators have blasphemed against this truth, saving that all the crimes of the wicked and all the good works of the just are the offspring of necessity; but the same St. Augustine gives them the lie when he says that in this case no reward or punishment would be just.

Book excerpt: This booklet gives a short outline of the origins of the devotions to Mary and the saints, the way in which saints are proclaimed today, and the place apparitions of Mary have in the context of the Church. The hope is that catechetical leaders will find here a resource that will help explain the place of Mary and the saints within the context of the life of the Church. Many of the most touching images in the Catholic imagination are those of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of favorite saints. We imagine, for example, the young Mary facing an angel who asks her to make a choice not only for herself but for the world as well or the image of a sorrowful mother at the foot of the cross. We also imagine the saints and their heroic love for God and others: the joy of St. Francis of Assisi preaching to the birds; the sacrifice of St. Maximillian Kolbe giving up his life so another can live. This book gives a short outline of the origins of the devotions to Mary and the saints, the way in which saints are proclaimed today, and the place apparitions of Mary have in the context of the Church. From the introductionCatholic Basics: A Pastoral Series offers an in-depth yet accessible understanding of the fundamentals of the Catholic faith for adults, both those active in pastoral ministry and those preparing for ministry. The series helps readers explore the Catholic tradition and apply what they have learned to their lives and ministry situations. Includes study questions and suggestions for further reading. "

Book The Path of the Martyrs Charles Martel the Battle of Tours and the Birth of Europe

This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'West puts the battle in its historical context, and shows how it set the course of history for more than a thousand years.' Piers Paul Read 732. The future of Europe is held in the balance. A Frankish force, assembled at speed, ready themselves to resist an army from the largest empire the world has ever seen. The Franks and Arabs give battle, between the cities of Poitiers and Tours. Would France become part of the sophisticated Muslim world to the south, or remain in the control of the Christian barbarians? The battle proves bloody, a clash of arms and civilisations. With the west lying in ruins after the fall of Rome, Charles Martel's victory would become the defining battle of the age, leading a chronicler soon after to describe the defenders by a new term -'Europeans'. In this gripping and informed account Ed West records the rise of the Islamic Empire, the emergence of the Franks in the ashes of Rome, and the events leading to the fateful day when Europe's future was decided close to the river Loire. Ed West is an author, journalist and blogger who has written for the Daily Telegraph, Catholic Herald, Evening Standard, The Times, Daily Express, Standpoint and the Spectator. He wrote a regular blog first for the Daily Telegraph and later for the Spectator, described by Peter Oborne as 'one of the most interesting of the rising generation of political writers'. He is also the author of a number of history books, the latest of which, Iron, Fire and Ice, looks at the historical inspiration for Game of Thrones.
