Book The Victoria Nyanza

Download or read book The Victoria Nyanza written by Paul Kollmann and published by . This book was released on 1899 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Victoria (in the Bantu language, Victoria Nyanza), is the largest lake in Africa and the second largest body of fresh water in the world, surpassed only by Lake Superior in North America. The lake is crossed by the equator, and is the chief source of the Nile River. The first European to reach the lake was the British explorer John Hanning Speke in 1858, who named it after Britain's Queen Victoria. In 1890, at the height of the European scramble for colonies in Africa, Britain and Germany divided Lake Victoria at 1° south latitude, with the southern portion allotted to Germany, the northern portion to Britain. The Germans conducted extensive scientific surveys of the southern shores of the lake, for both research and strategic purposes. This book, an English translation of a study by a former officer of the Imperial Troops for German East Africa, Paul Kollmann, provides detailed information about the land and peoples living along the shores of the lake. A concluding section is devoted to the grammar, pronunciation, and vocabularies of the Karagwe (Nkole), Ussindja, Uha, Ki-Uganda, and Ki-Ukerewe languages and dialects. Today, Lake Victoria lies partly in Tanzania, in Uganda, and in Kenya.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Victoria Nyanza: The Land, the Races and Their Customs, With Specimens of Some of the Dialects IN presenting to the reader a description of the races inhabiting the shores of the Victoria Nyanza, the most extensive fresh-water basin of Central Africa, exhibiting their customs and usages, their mode of life and their ethnographic relations, I have a twofold object in view to record in detail the results of my observations and the contents of my collections, and to awaken public interest in the most beautiful region of Germany's East African colony, destined at no distant time to play an important part in colonial enterprise. On my numerous excursions and expeditions west, south, and east of the lake, I enjoyed most favourable opportunities of making extensive and valuable collections of all kinds, of gather ing interesting information about the peculiarities of the several races, and of learning a great deal from my own personal observation. Book excerpt: Cattle Plague: A History is divided into five sections, dealing with the nature of the virus, followed by a chronological history of its occurrence in Europe from the Roman Empire to the final 20th century outbreaks; then administrative control measures through legislation, the principal players from the 18th century, followed by an analysis of some effects, political, economic and social. Then follows attempts at cure from earliest times encompassing superstition and witchcraft, largely Roman methods persisting until the 19th century; the search for a cure through inoculation and the final breakthrough in Africa at the end of the 19th century. The last section covers the disease in Asia and Africa. Appendices cover regulations now in force to control the disease as well as historical instructions, decrees and statutes dating from 1745-1878.
