Are we to understand by the solemn teaching of the Church in 1862 that a peculiar design or ruling of Divine Providence raises the Civil Principality above the ordinary moral order of society, and transfers it to the supernatural order? Or are we free to hold that, in spite of such particular design of Divine Providence, and special dispo sitiou of God, the Civil Principality remains subject to the natural laws which govern the moral world, and hence to the ebb and flow of the affairs of men? This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vicar of Christ, or Lectures Upon the Office and Prerogatives of Our Holy Father the Pope We have also published our own dedi cation of these lectures to His Holiness, and the gracious reply which he conde scended to give. While this letter of Pius IX. Is one of the great consolations of our life, it will add a new value to our humble labor. It may be proper also to say that we never presumed to claim for our work the merit of a complete theological treatise, but only sought to present a plain and popular argument for the prerogatives of the Vicar of Christ. We venture to hope that our efforts will not be altogether with out fruit. T. S. P. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Glories of the Catholic Church At a time when the eyes of nations are fixed on Rome, some in filial love because of the dangers which are closing round it, and others in eager hope of the downfall and dishonour of the Church of God; when Italy and the whole Catholic unity are afflicted by indignities heaped upon the Vicar of Jesus Christ, by those too who profess the Catholic name, the Holy Father, by commanding the publication of the following pages, points us to his solace and strength in the farthest East, where are now arising the New Glories of the Church of God. And to what does he direct our eyes? It is to no new splendour of Christian empires, no new monuments of Catholic civilization, but to the plains and cities of Corea, Tong-King, and Cochin-China, steeped with Catholic blood, shed not in the onslaught and victories of war, but in the more glorious martyrdoms of bishops and priests, of aged men, and feeble women, and children of tender age. Book The Catholic Home Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Home The Christian family is the unit which goes to {l build up the Catholic Church. To vary\ the metaphor, the Holy Family of Nazareth was the mustard-seed out of which the vast tree of the Universal Church has grown. In Joseph and Mary and the Holy Child we have the prototypes and models of the Father, the Mother, and the children who form the Catholic Family. Indeed, it is the ideal of the Family which pervades the whole constitution and life of the Church. Our Lord in His parables frequently refers to Almighty God as the Father of the family (paterfamilias), or simply as the Father. Think of the touching parable of the Prodigal Son. Christ taught us when we pray to address God as Our Father. St. Paul tells us that after Him all fatherhood in heaven and earth is named (eph. Iii. As Joseph, the foster-father, or legal father, of Christ in the home of Nazareth was, as spiritual writers tell us, the vicar or vice gerent of the Heavenly Father on earth - so that Mary could call him to her Divine Son, Thy father. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Papers, Vol. 4 Let us assume for a moment [he tells us], though in the teeth of all Scripture and history, that the doctrine of the Petrine privilege is true, that St. Peter was given infallible and sovereign jurisdiction over the whole Church Catholic, that he was Pope of Rome, that he conveyed his privileges indefeasibly to the Popes who succeeded him, and that the successor of the Fisherman is the supreme ruler and teacher. Of Christians, the one Vicar of Christ on earth, whose single word is the living voice of the Church, infallible and paramount. Even 'so, something further is essential; the Pope who claims these august privileges must be Pope zl'e jure as well as de fade. It is an axiom of Latin theology and canon law, that unlawful possession of the Papacy confers no rights whatever, and that all acts done by one who is Pope d'e faefo without being also Pope de iure are null and void. Book The Catholic Controversy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Catholic Controversy Classic Reprint written by Saint Francis De Sales and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Controversy This teaching he tests in Part II. By the Rule of Faith. Assuming as common ground that the Word of God is the Rule of Faith, he shows that the so called reformers have composed a false Scripture, and that they err also in rejecting Tradition or the un written Word of, God. And then, proceeding to the central point of his case, he shows that while the Word of God is the formal Rule of Faith, is the external standard by which faith is to be measured and adjusted, there is need of a judge who may explain, apply, and declare the meaning of the Word That judge is the Holy Catholic Church. She is thus the necessary exponent of the Rule of right-believing, and each of the voices by which' she utters her decision becomes also a part of the Rule of Faith, viz., her own general body, Councils, Fathers, and her supreme Head and mouthpiece, the Pope, the successor of S. Peter and Vicar of Christ. Miracles and harmony of doctrines may be considered the complement of the Rule of Faith. In all these matters the Saint proves conclusively that the Catholic Church alone fulfils the necessary conditions. In Part III. He comes to the doctrines of the Church in detail, but of this Part there only remain to us three chapters on the Sacraments and an Essay on Purgatory. This may suffice as to the aim and subject-matter of the Treatise. Of its intrinsic merits the author's name is sufficient guarantee, but we add more direct testimony because it is a new revelation of the Saint. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rome and the Revolution: A Sermon Last year, on this day, we made intercession be fore our Divine Lord, in the Blessed Sacrament, through the prayers of His Blessed Mother, in behalf of the person and authority of the Sovereign Pontiff. It was then a moment of great anxiety. On the twelfth of the following December the protection of France was to be withdrawn. It was prophesied that when 'the foreign bayonets' were gone, in twenty-four hours the Romans would rise, and the power of the Pontiff would be dissolved. They were withdrawn; and where are the prophets Pius IX. Reigns calmly still. In the month of June last, half the bishops of the world were gathered around the throne which ought to have been in dust. And now, again, before Rosary Sunday has returned, the chief antagonist of the Holy Father, the man who has earned his fame by bravade against the Vicar of Jesus Christ, has, by the just authority of his king, been rendered harmless. Such are the events of this twelvemonth past. We are entering on another year. I cannot foretell what it may bring forth. It is full of menace, and of peril, and all things seem tending to a crisis. But the events of the year gone by are an encouragement for the year to come. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
