The paucity of the large and difficult Old World genus Hieracium in America is a wonder and a relief to botanists. Lobeliacisjg.--Lobelia is essentially wanting from the Pacific and the Eocky Mountain floras, but well represented in that of the Atlantic. Instead, the Pacific flora is characterized by four peculiar genera, Downingia, Howellia (an aquatic plant of Oregon), Palmerella, and the curious Nemacladus. It has also a peculiar Laurentia, which extends eastward to the Eocky Mountains, where it is the only representative of the family. Campanulacee.--Are not.numerous; but Campanula has a few representatives in all three floras (in the interior only on the mountains); Specularia has fewer; and two genera of single species, Oithopsis and Heterocodon, are peculiar to the Pacific flora. Ericacee.--This important order needs to be considered under its suborders. VacCiNEiE.--111 the northern hemisphere affect the eastern side of continents. The five species of Oaylussacia (Huckleberries), and the dozen or more eastern endemic species of Vaccinium, as also the peculiar genus Ohiogenes, sparingly enter even the eastern part of the Mississippi Valley. Only amphigsean types occur in the Eocky Mountains and in the alpine or alpestrine region. The moister parts of the Pacific coast nourish two or three species of Vaccinium, but no other forms; yet all the Atlantic types, except Gaylussacia, occur again in Northeastern Asia. Erioine;.--In North America are not unequally divided between the Atlantic and Pacific floras; but the interior region has very few, not one peculiar, and none except upon high mountains or of equivalent northern range. The Pacific flora is remarkable for having an Arbutus and ten species of Arctostaphylos...

Book excerpt: Originally published in 2002, Mountain Biodiversity deals with the biological richness, function and change of mountain environments. The book was birthed from the first global conference on mountain biodiversity and was a contribution to the International Year of Mountains in 2002. The book examines biological diversity as essential for the integrity of mountain ecosystems and argues that this dependency is likely to increase as environmental climates and social conditions change. This book seeks to examine the biological riches of all major mountain ranges, from around the world and using existing knowledge on mountain biodiversity, examines a broad range of research in diversity, including that of plants, animals, human and bacterial diversity. The book also examines climate change and mountain biodiversity as well as land use and conservation.

Book Arctic and Alpine Environments

Download or read book Arctic and Alpine Environments written by Jack D. Ives and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 1066 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1974, Arctic and Alpine Environments examines, the relatively simple ecosystems of arctic and alpine lands that still occupy extensive areas little disturbed by modern technology. The book argues that there is a necessity for carefully controlled development of the resources of these regions and suggests that there is a risk of irreversible disturbance without full understanding of these regions. This book provides a detailed documentation of cold-stressed arctic and alpine terrestrial environments and systematically deals with the present and past physical environment – climate, hydrology and glaciology; biota – treeline, vegetation, vertebrate zoology, and historical biogeography; abiotic processes – geomorphological and pedological and the role of man – bioclimatology, archaeology and technological impact, including radioecology. The book will appeal to academics and students of environmental and biological science, as well as providing a significant source for conservationists’, government agencies and industrial organizations.

Book The Great American Biotic Interchange

Download or read book The Great American Biotic Interchange written by Francis G. Stehli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two rather different elements combine to explain the origin of this volume: one scientific and one personal. The broader of the two is the scientific basis-the time for such a volume had arrived. Geology had made remarkable progress toward an understanding of the phys ical history of the Caribbean Basin for the last 100 million years or so. On the biological side, many new discoveries had elucidated the distributional history of terrestrial orga nisms in and between the two Americas. Geological and biological data had been combined to yield the timing of important events with unprecedented resolution. Clearly, when each of two broad disciplines is making notable advances and when each provides new insights for the other, the rewards of cross-disciplinary contacts increase exponentially. The present volume represents an attempt to bring together a group of geologists, paleontologists and biologists capable of exploiting this opportunity through presentation of an interdisciplinary synthesis of evidence and hypothesis concerning interamerican connections during the Cretaceous and Cenozoic. Advances in plate tectonics form the basis for a modern synthesis and, in the broadest terms, dictate the framework within which the past and present distributions of organisms must be interpreted. Any scientific dis cipline must seek tests of its conclusions from data outside of its own confines.
