Book A Survey of Natural History Collections in New Brunswick

Download or read book A Survey of Natural History Collections in New Brunswick written by Donald F. McAlpine and published by [Saint John] : New Brunswick Museum. This book was released on 1986 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of natural history collections in New Brunswick was carried out in1984-85. It revealed 11 institutions and nine individuals maintaining whatare considered 43 discrete collections of an estimated 401,576 naturalhistory specimens. Those categories of collections best represented inprovince were botany, entomology and geology. This survey suggests certaintaxa are markedly under-represented in provincial collections -non-vascular plants, freshwater invertebrates, and terrestrial invertebratesexclusive of insects. Natural history collections will have to be betterfunded and more adequately staffed if the full potential of provincialscientific collections is to be realized in the future.

Book Biodiversity Survey of Moths of Fundy National Park

Download or read book Biodiversity Survey of Moths of Fundy National Park written by A. W. Thomas and published by Halifax, N.S. : Parks Canada, Atlantic Region. This book was released on 1999 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is an introduction to the results of a five-year co-operative study into the feasibility of using moths as biological indicators of ecosystem health in Fundy National Park, New Brunswick. The report describes the moth sampling methodology used, describes and maps the sampling site locations, and provides details of the floristic composition of the sites. Study results presented demonstrate the patterns of seasonal distributions of both individuals and species, and the pattern of species emergence throughout the year for each of four years at two of the sites. Based on the similarities in the patterns between and within sites and years, a protocol for conducting further moth surveys is also proposed. Appendices include tables showing vegetation species composition at the study sites and graphs showing numbers of individual moths and species observed in research traps.

Book A Guide to the Common Phytoplankton of the St Croix Estuary New Brunswick

Download or read book A Guide to the Common Phytoplankton of the St Croix Estuary New Brunswick written by David J. Rawlence and published by New Brunswick : New Brunswick Museum. This book was released on 1987 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The St. Croix is one of three rivers discharging into the Bay of Fundy through Passamaquoddy Bay, which supports the most productive fishery in the Bay of Fundy. Mean tidal amplitude at the head of the Estuary is 6.1 m, which combined with the considerable discharge from the St. Croix, contributes to the generally high suspended load characteristic of the estuary. The spring and autumn phytoplankton maxima are therefore restricted vertically by rapid light attenuation and distributed horizontally in somewhat patch fashion. The groups of phytoplankton covered in this guide include diatoms, the loricate chrysophytes of the genus Binobryon, and the dinoflagellates. Keys are provided for the identification of 108 diatoms, 7 species of Dinobryon, and 8 dinoflagellate taxa. Comments are included about the collection of phytoplankton, together with some guidance on the cleaning and preservation of diatoms.
