While women were permitted to be prophets and visionaries they rarely played an important part in church organisation. This paradox is explored in this book and a number of themes emerge: in particular, the dominance of male symbolism within the great religions. The question of whether men and women apprehend religious systems and signs in the same way is also explored. In considering the contemporary scene, the book is able to look at the ways in which religion affects the lives of women in different societies and in different historical periods; this gives us a larger view of the ways in which our own perceptions of ‘femaleness’ have been constructed out of the religious world views of both the past and the present. The category of women's experience is pivotal to feminist theology, yet its use may lead to models of atonement that place excessive stress upon the subjective element of Christ's saving work thereby neglecting to address adequately the objective aspects of the cross. This book focuses on the methodological issues regarding the category of women's experience generally, its definition and use in feminist theology, with a more detailed analysis of its use in the context of feminist theologies of atonement. Utilizing the work of a wide variety of feminist theologians in conversation with theologies of experience, this work attempts to understand the role of women's experience as it shapes feminist views on the atonement, noting the strengths and limitations of feminist approaches to soteriology.

This study was designed to deepen our understanding of IPV victims¿ experience over time and to examine: (1) trajectories of intimate partner violence; (2) trajectories of employment and emotional well-being for victims of IPV; (3) potential predictors of these patterns, identified based on an ecological or contextual model, and (4) the prediction of re-victimization. This study goes beyond individual characteristics of the batterer or victim to identify contributors to patterns of IPV that are rooted in the larger community and the battered women's social support system. Closely observing the production, promotion, reception, and narrative strategies of the soaps, Levine examines two intersecting developments: the role soap operas have played in shaping cultural understandings of gender and the rise and fall of broadcast network television as a culture industry. In so doing, she foregrounds how soap operas have revealed changing conceptions of gender and femininity as imagined by and reflected on the television screen.
