Book excerpt: Sheltering Mercy helps us rediscover the rich treasures of the Psalms--through free-verse prayer renderings of their poems and hymns--as a guide to personal devotion and meditation. The church has always used the Psalms as part of its prayer life, and they have inspired countless other prayers. This book contains 75 prayers drawn from Psalms 1-75, providing lyrical sketches of what authors Ryan Smith and Dan Wilt have seen, heard, and felt while sojourning in the Psalms. While each prayer corresponds to a particular psalm and touches on its themes and ideas, it is not a new translation of the Psalms or an attempt to modernize or contextualize their content or language. Rather, the prayers are responses to the Psalms written in harmony with Scripture. These prayers help us quiet our hearts before God and welcome us into a safe place amid the storms of life. This artful, poetic, and classic devotional book features compelling custom illustrations and beautiful hardcover binding, offering a fresh way to reflect on and pray the Psalms.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Psalms: Versified and Annotated Of these two important words, the latter is the name prefixed to a psalm by its inspired author; the former is the verb from which the latter, the noun, is derived. The true and solid foundation on which the Opinion assailed rests, the bold assailant keeps out of the view of his readers; for on this subject he does not bring forward a single passage from the New Testament. Under Contents of the Psalms, he does refer to Luke 24: 48. The use which our Lord makes of the Psalms after the resurrection, rests on the supposition, that they were composed under divine direction, page 7th.' What is this but impious presumption, thus to impeach the assured knowledge of Him who is the truth. It is necessary, as an urgent duty, from the confess edly insidious and really reckless assault on the divinely authorized name of this sacred book, and in defence of very important truth relative to the worship of God and may be profitable to readers, who seek such profit, to ex pose the positive introductory statement in the Appendix, inflated, as it is, into the outward form of an inference without any premises, covered with a loose dress of words, through which its meaning may be seen, though, in the last clause, its application or purpose is pushed away into an intended obscurity, perhaps from timidity, or merely to bring into suspicion, as the shrewd critic, in his by-way in sight of its end, dropped a few words with that hint in them. Book Aesthetics from Classical Greece to the Present

Download or read book Aesthetics from Classical Greece to the Present written by Monroe C. Beardsley and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 1975-10-30 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeks to bring present-day philosophy principles into the history of aesthetics Before the publication of Aesthetics from Classical Greece to the Present there were three histories of aesthetics in English—Bosanquet's pioneering work, the second part of Croce's Aesthetic in the Ainsle translation, and the comprehensive volume by Gilbert and Kuhn. While each of these is interesting in its own ways, and together they cover a good deal of ground, none of them is very new. Thus none could take advantage of recent work on many important philosophers and periods and bring into a consideration of the past the best concepts and principles that have been developed by present-day philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psalms make up the most popular, most universally loved and used book in the Bible, which is the most widely read book in the world. They are hymns, songs, poems, and prayers—at once formal and informal, liturgical and spontaneous, communal and individual. As a result, they have many layers of meaning. In this work, Peter Kreeft focuses on a dozen of the best-known psalms, including Psalms 23 and 51. He leads the reader through his personal explorations of this deep ocean of divinely inspired spiritual water, pulling up treasures for the soul along the way. "What prayers did Jesus and his disciples pray? The Psalms! As all Jews have always done ever since they had them. The Psalms are God's answer to our plea, 'Teach us to pray.' Christ prayed them not only in the synagogue but throughout His life, and at his death." — Peter Kreeft, from the Introduction
