Book Before the Count

Download or read book Before the Count written by Margo Collins and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the Count offers a corrective to the history of the literary vampire presenting a collection of other vampire tales written before Dracula. Some of the poems, plays, and stories included here are indeed melodramatic and perhaps even histrionic, but they offer important insight into the development of the vampire mythos in England from its literary beginning until the publication of Bram Stoker's novel. In so doing, it offers both scholars and students the opportunity to study the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literary vampire in a more complete context. Included in this edition are excerpts from the early British newspaper accounts of vampires, the English translation of Dom Augustin Calment's book, and Lord Byron's "Fragment" in order to illustrate the genesis of John Polidori's The Vampyre a well as J. R. Planch's 1820 revision of the French play Le Vampire by Peirre Carmouche, Charles Nodier, and Achilles de Jouffroy, itself a revision of Polidori's story; Johann Wolfgang Goethe's The Bride of Corinth, Dion Boucicault's The Phantom, George Blink's The Vampire Bride and Rudyard Kipling's The Vampire.

After one hundred years of being a vampire, it’s time for Eleonora to have her Birthnight. Since Leo’s last rite of passage, her Grimwalk, ended with her losing her right leg and a good deal of her confidence, she’s hoping to redeem herself in the eyes of her mother, the fearsome Lady Sieglinde. All Leo has to do is hunt down and kill her first prey, and she already has the perfect plan. After all, who will miss an orphan from the bleak St. Frieda’s Home for Unfortunate Children? But an accidental fire causes more death and destruction than Leo bargained for. Instead of killing one carefully selected victim, she’s created several ghosts from the orphanage residents. And one sinister specter, the Orphanmaster, is poised to terrorize the living residents in a nearby town. To stop him and try to undo some of the mess she’s made, Leo must team up with the orphan ghost Minna. Will Leo have the chance to prove herself as a vampire before her Birthnight is over, or will she discover that there are no winners in the battle of undead versus undead?

  • Author : Michael Sims

  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 9781408808252
  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book Dracula s Guest written by Michael Sims and published by Bloomsbury UK. This book was released on 2010 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Twilight and True Blood, even before Buffy and Anne Rice and Bela Lugosi, vampires haunted the nineteenth century, when brilliant writers everywhere indulged their blood thirsty imaginations, culminating in Bram Stoker's legendary 1897 novel, Dracula. Michael Sims brings together the very best vampire stories of the Victorian era-from England, America, France, Germany, Transylvania, and even Japan - into a unique collection that highlights their cultural variety. Beginning with the supposedly true accounts that captivated Byron and Shelley, the stories range from Edgar Allan Poe's The Oval Portrait and Sheridan Le Fanu's Camilla to Guy de Maupassant's The Horla and Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Good Lady Ducayne. Sims also includes a nineteenth century tour of Translayvanian superstitions, and rounds out the collection with Stoker's own Dracula's Guest - a chapter ommitted from his landmark novel. Vampires captivated the Victorians, as Sims reveals in his insightful introduction- In 1867, Karl Marx described capitalism as 'dead labour, which, vampire-like, lives only by sucking living labour', while in 1888 a London newspaper invoked vampires in trying to explain Jack the Ripper's predations. At a time when vampires have been re-created in a modern context, Dracula's Guest will remind readers, young, old and inbetween of why the undead won't let go of our imagination.

Download or read book From Demons to Dracula written by Matthew Beresford and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2008-12-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In blood-soaked lore handed down the centuries, the vampire is a monster of endless fascination: from Bram Stoker’s Dracula to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this seductive lover of blood haunts popular culture and inhabits our darkest imaginings. The cultural history of the vampire is a rich and varied tale that is now ably documented in From Demons to Dracula, a compelling study of the vampire myth that reveals why this creature of the undead fascinates us so. Beresford’s chronicle roams from the mountains of Eastern Europe to the foggy streets of Victorian England to Hollywood, as he investigates the portrayal of the vampire in history, literature, and art. Opening with the original Dracula, Vlad the Impaler, and his status as a national hero in Romania, he endeavors to winnow out truths from the complex legend and folklore. From Demons to Dracula tracks the evolution of the vampire as an icon and supernatural creature, drawing on classical Greek and Roman myths, witch trials and medieval plagues, Gothic literature, and even contemporary works such as Anne Rice’s Interview with a Vampire and Elizabeth Kostova’s The Historian. Beresford also looks at the widespread impact of screen vampires from television shows, classic movies starring Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee, and more recent films such as Underworld and Blade. Whether as a demon of the underworld or a light-fearing hunter of humans, the vampire has endured through the centuries, the book reveals, as powerfully symbolic figure for human concerns with life, death, and the afterlife. A wide-ranging and engrossing chronicle, From Demons to Dracula casts this blood-thirsty nightstalker as a remarkably complex and telling totem of our nightmares, real and imagined.

Download or read book Stories Beyond Belief 2 written by Sarah Ruth Scott and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the following stories have been written in Scotland and Sweden. My research for the Harrington curse took place in Aberlady near North Berwick, Scotland. My latest work, Eight Skulls of Teversham, was written partly in Inverness, taking in the atmosphere of the misty hills of Scotlands highlandssuch a beautiful sight to behold. Double exposure was also created with a location of Scotland in mind, taking me back to my ancestors, the Scott clan, and the famous Sir Walter Scott. The stories created in Sweden were cracked porcelain, which covered a wide area of mental and physical abuse. This fictitious book was based on factual events and concerned itself with the life of Ruth Ashley, a psychiatric nurse. I am convinced that a ghost called Sarah influenced my writing, something called automatic writing. For the Love of Charlotte was written in the United States of America, and I must confess greatly influenced by the 9/11 attack on the twin towers in 2001. Again the writing was influenced by ghosts. It is my dream that sooner or later, someone will read this work and consider writing a screenplay for television or movie. Now wouldnt that be good? Teversham is actually in Cambridgeshire, but for the story, there is one on the Scottish border, both a town and a village where the eight skulls existed. Any similarity is purely coincidental and should not be mistaken for the small village that is in Cambridgeshire.
