Book excerpt: The authors of The Red Web examine the shifting role of Russian expatriates throughout history, and their complicated, unbreakable relationship with the mother country--be it antagonistic or far too chummy. The history of Russian espionage is soaked in blood, from a spontaneous pistol shot that killed a secret policeman in Romania in 1924 to the attempt to poison an exiled KGB colonel in Salisbury, England, in 2017. Russian émigrés have found themselves continually at the center of the mayhem. Russians began leaving the country in big numbers in the late nineteenth century, fleeing pogroms, tsarist secret police persecution, and the Revolution, then Stalin and the KGB--and creating the third-largest diaspora in the world. The exodus created a rare opportunity for the Kremlin. Moscow's masters and spymasters fostered networks of spies, many of whom were emigrants driven from Russia. By the 1930s and 1940s, dozens of spies were in New York City gathering information for Moscow. But the story did not end with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Some émigrés have turned into assets of the resurgent Russian nationalist state, while others have taken up the dissident challenge once more--at their personal peril. From Trotsky to Litvinenko, The Compatriots is the gripping history of Russian score-settling around the world.

Download or read book Yorktown written by Kathleen Manley and Richard Shisler and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1750, the deepwater port of Yorktown housed approximately 250-300 businesses, with as many as 2,000 people thriving in the small town. By 1781, the Revolutionary War's final siege had been staged, and the British were caught without resources to win the final battle against the American and Allied forces. Freedom was won for America, but Yorktown would continue to see war. In 1862, the Peninsula Campaign of the Civil War led to a monthlong battle near the site of the previous conflict. In 1917, World War I brought the embarkation of the Atlantic Fleet, and within a few decades, World War II would change Yorktown and the nation forever. These historic postcards portray the first family houses, the churches, the courthouses, the military, the battlefields, and the commemorative memorials of the area, showing the town's progression through time, from the 18th century through the present day.

Book The Valley s Edge

Download or read book The Valley s Edge written by Daniel R. Green and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2012 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this gripping, firsthand account, Daniel Green tells the story of U.S. efforts to oust the Taliban insurgency from the desolate southern Afghan province of Uruzgan. Nestled between the Hindu Kush mountains and the sprawling wasteland of the Margow and Khash Deserts, Uruzgan is a microcosm of U.S. efforts to prevent Afghanistan from falling to the Taliban insurgency and Islamic radicalism. Green, who served in Uruzgan from 2005 to 2006 as a U.S. Department of State political adviser to a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), reveals how unrealistic expectations, a superficial understanding of the Afghans, and a lack of resources contributed to the Taliban's resurgence in the area. He discusses the PRT's good-governance efforts, its reconstruction and development projects, the violence of the insurgency, and the PRT's attempts to manage its complex relationship with the local warlord cum governor of the province. Upon returning to Afghanistan in 2009 with the U.S. military and while working at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul until 2010, Green discovered that although many improvements had been made since he had last served in the country, the problems he had experienced in Uruzgan continued despite the transition from the Bush administration to the Obama administration.

Book The Battle of Oriskany and General Nicholas Herkimer

This book was released on 2013-02-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping account of events before, during, and after this British defeat in New York’s Mohawk Valley, and the man who led the Continental army to victory. During the critical Battle of Oriskany in August 1777, Continental forces led by General Nicholas Herkimer defeated the British army under St. Leger in the heart of New York’s Mohawk Valley. It was a hard-won victory, but he and his brave troops prevented the British from splitting the colonies in two. Although they did not succeed in relieving the British siege of Fort Stanwix, Herkimer’s citizen-soldiers turned back the British and protected Washington’s northern flank from attack. The Continental army survived to fight the decisive Battle of Saratoga the next month. Herkimer was mortally wounded, but his heroism and leadership firmly placed him in the pantheon of Revolutionary War heroes. Paul Boehlert presents a gripping account of the events before, during and after this critical battle. Includes photos and illustrations

Book excerpt: The decade of the fifties is considered to be “The Age of Innocence” by historians. Television was in its infancy and those who could afford one watched The Ed Sullivan Show, Howdy Doody and Alfred Hitchcock Presents in black and white. Radio stations still boasted such programs as Sky King, The Lone Ranger, Ellery Queen, Inner Sanctum and Gang Busters, and all with enormous audiences. Women wore dresses; girls wore cardigans buttoned up the back over pinecone bras, and only boys wore jeans. Spanking a child was not considered child abuse, and even the tougher teenagers addressed their elders as “sir” or “mam.” A girl may have smoked cigarettes but she never did it on a public street, and a man always held a door open for a lady. It’s true; times were simpler back then, but not nearly as innocent as historians would lead us to believe. This is not a history book. Instead this story takes us back to that time and dispels the myth that has been perpetuated by those who were not there to witness the events. Through the eyes of teenagers, typical of those who lived in any of the small cities and towns across America during that time, the reader will find themselves with memories resurrected that they can personally relate to. Though fictionalized, all of the characters depicted in the book are “real,” and with whatever one you may empathize, you will feel very comfortable wearing their crinolines or motorcycle jackets.
