Book excerpt: Investigation into the production and utilization of wood residues, conducted the summer of 1987. Wood residues are classified as either 'harvest' or 'processing' residues and are defined as biomass material which remains after the production of the primary product or products. Detailed data on residue production by primary wood producers and by wood processing plants was assembled and catalogued in a computer program which is included in the report. Detailed data on the users of New Brunswick residue, both within the province and in adjacent provinces and the United States, is also included. The report also includes calculations of the heating value of various types of residue fuels and the development of costs for processing and transportation of wood residues from their source to the point of utilization.

Book Energy and Raw Material Potentials of Wood Residue in the Pacific Coast States

Download or read book Energy and Raw Material Potentials of Wood Residue in the Pacific Coast States written by John Bernard Grantham and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are reported of a preliminary investigation of feasibility of using wood residue to meet energy and raw material needs in the Pacific Coast States. Magnitude of needs was examined and volume of logging-residue and unused mill residue was estimated. Costs of obtaining and preprocessing logging residue for energy and pulp and particle board raw material were estimated and compared with selling values of mill residue fuel, pulp chips, and particle board. Marginally feasible energy use seemed best suited for inplant steam and power production by the wood industry, Although raw material selling values make wood residue use for products more attractive than for electric power generation, even these returns are seldom sufficient to meet the high costs of delivering logging residue for such use alone. Production of higher valued products or public absorption of extra costs of utilization can make these residue management alternatives more feasible.

Download or read book Tree Power written by Peter Love and published by [Ottawa]: Energy, Mines and Resources Canada, Renewable Energy Resources Branch. This book was released on 1978 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report is to present a preliminary estimate of the potential contribution of forestry biomass to Canada's energy requirements to the year 2025. It begins with a review of forestry biomass conversion technologies, from which three reference cases have been formulated to facilitate discussion: direction conversion of wood to electricity in a 50-megawatt boiler; low-Btu gasification of wood combined with on-site utilization; and wood gasification combined with methanol production from the resulting synthesis gas. The report then estimates the total resource of forest biomass in Canada and evaluates sources of supply, including forest residues and energy plantations. It discusses principal uses for the different types of energy (steam, electricity, fuels) that can be produced from forest biomass, the factors affecting implementation of forest biomass energy technologies (including institutional constraints and environmental and social impacts), and the costs of energy produced by the three reference cases.
