Book The Effects of Mental Imagery Practice on the Performance of Selected Psychomotor Tennis Skills of Postsecondary Students

Download or read book The Effects of Mental Imagery Practice on the Performance of Selected Psychomotor Tennis Skills of Postsecondary Students written by Bill Russell Gordon and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of mental imagery practice on the performance of selected psychomotor tennis skills of postsecondary students. The principal investigator/researcher conducted a quasi-experimental quantitative study involving a post hoc statistical analysis. The population included six beginning tennis activity classes, for a total of 138 subjects, who participated during the fall 2003 semester on the campus of a small, private midwestern university. The instrument used in this study was the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Tennis skills Test authored by Larry Hensley. This instrument was selected due to its exclusive design for the testing of tennis skills as well as validity and reliability. An alpha level of .05 was used for all analyses. The principal investigator/researcher conducted a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and paired t-tests to examine the mean changes among and within the three groups studied. The results of the study were the following: (a) the control group, Group 3, showed a significant difference between the pretest to posttest, however, not as significant as either Group 1 or Group 2; (b) the group that incorporated the practice of mental imagery prior to physical practice, Group 1, demonstrated a significant difference between the pretest to posttest, recording the highest gains among all groups tested; and (c) the group that incorporated the practice of mental imagery after physically practicing, Group 2, showed a significant difference-- more than Group 3 but less than Group 1. These results are supported by previous research study investigations. The results that both experimental groups employing the use of mental imagery practice in conjugation with physical practice are superior to physical practice alone, are congruent with the literature reviewed. The results that indicated Group 1 using mental imagery prior to physical practice as superior to Group 2 using mental imagery after physical practice and Group 3 physical practice only, can also be found in the literature"--Abstract.

Book Mental Training in Tennis

Download or read book Mental Training in Tennis written by David de Haan and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering book was created based on the assessed needs and became an educational tool of reference. It has contributed to the systematic development and implementation of mental skills training necessary to foster success and well-being. Since the release of the Portuguese version of this book in 2009 (together with the implementation of clinics, educational workshops, and consulting by RMC), Portugal has seen significant developments in terms of professional tennis players' mental toughness. Portugal is currently a nation that has several ATP top players. More importantly, mental training now has a serious place within the development of tennis professionals and youth.Besides the sports arena, RMC has conceived success manuals for students and teachers to enhance academic performance and develop life skills. RMC desires to produce additional Mental Training books for specific sports and diverse contexts (e.g., business, health, performing arts). RMC is currently writing a book on effective parenting (in sports and life in general), an area considered extremely important and still underdeveloped. Although there is plenty of literature on mental skills, we believe that there are not enough applied books that provide both informative content and easy tools to implement on your own.The updated English version of 2009 released Portuguese Mental Training in Tennis book, does provide the relevant performance enhancement content, and applied strategies for success. Specifically, it contains 33 (off-, and on-court) step-by-step exercises linked to each of the six areas included in the book: Psychological Training, Motivation, Goal-Setting, Positive Self-Dialogue, Concentration, Confidence. Although the language and examples of the "Mental Training in Tennis: applied strategies for success" book is specific tennis, its scientific foundations and strategies apply to all domains: Sports, Education, Health, Special forces, Performing arts and business.

Can we all use such techniques to improve performance in our daily lives? In the Mind's Eye addresses these and other intriguing questions. This volume considers basic issues of performance, exploring how techniques for quick learning affect long-term retention, whether an expert's behavior can serve as a model for beginners, if team performance is the sum of individual members' performances, and whether subliminal learning has a basis in science. The book also considers meditation and some other pain control techniques. Deceit and the ability to detect deception are explored in detail. In the area of self-assessment techniques for career development, the volume evaluates the widely used Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.
