This rich tapestry weaves a compelling saga of five families—the Wilsons, the Masons, the family of Porteus, the Shockleys, and the Godfreys—who reflect the changing character of Britain. Book Ceremonies of the Sarum Missal

Download or read book Ceremonies of the Sarum Missal written by Richard Urquhart and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R.J. Urquhart provides the first systematic description of the ceremonial of the Sarum Mass in 500 years. Using a variety of sources, and tracing the Sarum rite and its occasional use from the Act of Supremacy through to modern times, Urquhart has compiled a volume that offers the best possible reconstruction and overview of these profoundly beautiful rites from the liturgical treasury of the Church. Urquhart considers Sarum in the light of Pope Benedict XVI's groundbreaking apostolic constitution, Anglicanorum Coetibus, and how this has reopened the question of the catholicity of part of the Anglican patrimony. He also considers the impact of Pope Benedict's Summorum Pontificum and its proposition that what was sacred for earlier generations remains sacred now, arguing that this supremely pastoral teaching calls for a more profound and detailed study of the rite. Urquhart covers all aspects of the ritual, beginning with an outline of the vessels, books and vestments and then moving on to outline both Low and High Mass, special forms, processions and blessings, and the ritual year. Appendices cover the role of the laity, and offer an Ordo Missae with simple rubrics.

Book excerpt: The Sarum Use was founded on customs for the organisation of music and liturgy, as well as management and finance, employed by the bishop, dean and chapter of Salisbury Cathedral until the Reformation, when its liturgical content was rationalised by Cranmer to form the first English Use in the Book of Common Prayer . The origins and development of these customs reach back to the early Middle Ages, to Celtic practices, as well as to the Anglo-Saxon customs of royal Sherborne. Sarum, Old and New, refined the traditions with Norman influence and the result was a Use which became predominant throughout the English Church.

Book Understanding Medieval Liturgy

Download or read book Understanding Medieval Liturgy written by Dr Helen Gittos and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-12-28 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to current work and new directions in the study of medieval liturgy. It focuses primarily on so-called occasional rituals such as burial, church consecration, exorcism and excommunication rather than on the Mass and Office. Recent research on such rites challenges many established ideas, especially about the extent to which they differed from place to place and over time, and how the surviving evidence should be interpreted. These essays are designed to offer guidance about current thinking, especially for those who are new to the subject, want to know more about it, or wish to conduct research on liturgical topics. Bringing together scholars working in different disciplines (history, literature, architectural history, musicology and theology), time periods (from the ninth to the fifteenth centuries) and intellectual traditions, this collection demonstrates the great potential that liturgical evidence offers for understanding many aspects of the Middle Ages. It includes essays that discuss the practicalities of researching liturgical rituals; show through case studies the problems caused by over-reliance on modern editions; explore the range of sources for particular ceremonies and the sort of questions which can be asked of them; and go beyond the rites themselves to investigate how liturgy was practised and understood in the medieval period.

Book The Use of Hereford

Download or read book The Use of Hereford written by William Smith and published by Hymns Ancient & Modern. This book was released on 2020 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Use of Hereford, a local variation of the Roman Rite, was one of the principal diocesan liturgies of medieval England before their abolition and replacement by the Book of Common Prayer after 1549. Unlike the widespread Use of Sarum, the Use of Hereford was confined mainly to its cathedral and diocese, which enabled it to maintain its individuality until the mid sixteenth century. This monograph examines the Use of Hereford in the context of the British diocesan rites in general, as well as considering its possible Lotharingian origins during the late eleventh century and its surviving sources, both manuscript and printed. In addition to its more familiar missals, breviaries and gradual, lesser known sources include fragments of early Hereford service-books dismembered at the Reformation, and now hidden away as binding or archival scrap in libraries and record offices. The distinctiveness of the Use of Hereford is also discussed as well as the possible reasons for its continuation, due probably to its cathedral's unique constitutional and liturgical identity, which enabled it to maintain its integrity in a Province largely dominated by Sarum Use.
