Download or read book The Use Of Radioautography in Investigating Protein Synthesis written by C Leblond and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Use of Radioautography in Investigating Protein Synthesis represents the 1965 Symposium on The Use of Radioautography in Investigating Protein Synthesis, supported by the International Society for Cell Biology. This book is composed of four parts encompassing 18 chapters. The opening part deals first with the basic aspects and mode of operation of the radioautography technique. This part also examines the advantages and potentials of this technique compared to other cytological techniques. The next parts are devoted to the experimental methods of protein synthesis in nucleus and in cells of various types, as revealed by the electron microscope radioautography. The concluding part discusses the secretion and synthesis of protein enzymes by the acinar cells in rat pancreas and fibroblasts in wound healing. This part also considers the application of radioautography to determining the sites of synthesis of proteins. This book is of great value to cell biologists, biochemists, cytologists, histologists, and pathologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That chemicals (although not always called by this name) affect the brain and its functions, such as behavior, has been known for thousands of years. It is therefore surprising that the concept that chemical mechanisms are at least partially responsible for the complex functions of the brain is so recent. Investigation of the closely interlinked biophysical and biochemical proper ties of the nervous system has achieved many notable successes in recent years and is the most exciting development in 20th-century science. Although all the morphology, the activity, and the alteration of the brain, whether bioelectric, biochemical, pathological, or structural, constitute an organic and indivisible whole, the ambition of the Handbook is to look at only a few aspects of this whole and to focus the discussions on the experi ments that the neurochemists have performed. Neurochemical study of the nervous system has, perhaps of necessity, gone through several phases: the first phase was more analytical and in volved study of the composition of the tissue; the second, more recent phase clarified many of the metabolic sequences that occur in this tissue. Clearly, both were essential, but they showed that additional approaches are neces sary. The present phase seems to be the study of control processes; present interest focuses on what determines, in a qualitative and quantitative fashion, the processes occurring in the nervous system. Perhaps the next phase will be the study of function, the study of the final stage of integration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Orleans has a distinguished history as a center for medical and biological learning, a history shared by Tulane University, its School of Medicine, and its Bio logical and Medical Sciences departments. This background made it especially fitting that the University, in conjunction with the Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans, Inc. and the National Cancer Institute, should sponsor the "Symposium: Biology of Amphibian Tumors" held October 28, 29, 30, 1968. The University wishes to express its appreciation to the Cancer Association for its assistance in making the Symposium possible and to acknowledge the support made available through the Bio medical Sciences Support Grant program of the National Institutes of Health. As the title of this volume indicates, the Symposium yielded valuable results in the area of cancer research and it stands to stimulate further efforts in this most important field. Some notion of the impact of this symposium is suggested by the broad range of the 200 participants it attracted. They came not only from the breadth and length of the U.S., but from abroad, from France, England, Austria, and Italy.

Book Control Mechanisms in the Expression of Cellular Phenotypes

Download or read book Control Mechanisms in the Expression of Cellular Phenotypes written by Helen Padykula and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control Mechanisms in the Expression of Cellular Phenotypes documents the proceedings of a symposium of the International Society for Cell Biology. In progressively widening investigations, phenotypic expression has come to a critical focus not only in the developmental biology of animal and plant cells, but also in such fields as immunology, cytogenetics, enzymatic regulation, and tumor biology. It was for this reason that the present symposium was organized as a means of bringing together investigators of widely different backgrounds. The contributions made by researchers at the symposium include studies on gene expression in allophenic mice; the regulation of uridine 5-monophosphate synthesis in human diploid cells; the melanotic expression of embryonic pigment cells; and clonal cell lines of neurons. Other papers deal with biochemical genetics studies on mammalian cells in vitro; embryos from somatic plant cells; somatic cell hybrids as tools for genetic studies in man; and utilization of somatic cells for genetic analysis.

Book Formation and Fate of Cell Organelles

Download or read book Formation and Fate of Cell Organelles written by Katherine Brehme Warren and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formation and Fate of Cell Organelles presents the proceedings of the symposia of the International Society for Cell Biology. Contributors offer their views on various aspects of the problem of spontaneous assembly, particularly how cellular structures arise from the component molecules. They consider whether all cellular organelles and cells, themselves, can arise by spontaneous assembly, or whether some regulation is involved and the mechanisms underlying such regulation. This book is organized into 16 chapters and begins with an overview of self-assembling systems of equal units and how they can be built efficiently, focusing on quasi-equivalence and helical waves on bacterial flagella. This text also discusses the differences in free energy of the molecules in their various states and the use of the free energy of a particular array of molecules to predict what arrays will form. The reader is introduced to intermolecular forces and how macromolecular lipid structures assemble in vitro, along with developments in the resolution of the spindle fibers of the mitotic apparatus. The book also looks into the mechanisms underlying the disposition of microtubules in plant cells during interphase and mitosis, and then concludes with a chapter on some studies dealing with cytoplasmic genes and cytoplasmic inheritance. This book is a valuable source of information for scientists and researchers engaged in fields ranging from cytology and biology to chemistry, pathology, and biophysics.

Book Autoradiography and Immunocytochemistry

Download or read book Autoradiography and Immunocytochemistry written by M.A. Williams and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autoradiography and Immunocytochemistry sets out in detail the preparation of autoradiographs and methods of preparing and use of immunological staining reagents. This book begins with an introduction to the demand for autoradiography and immunocytochemistry and their most advantageous use, followed by a discussion on the immunocytochemistry at the electron microscopical (EM) level in relation to the preparation of labeled antibodies. Other topics include the general remarks on “staining with antibodies; applying Fer-Ab conjugates to ultrathin sections; and controls in immunoferritin staining. The multistep antibody staining methods with unmodified proteins; control observations in staining experiments using lectins; and pattern analysis in EM immunocytochemistry are also covered. This text concludes with a description of the preparation of electron microscope autoradiographs, including the radioisotopes in EM autoradiography, preparation of radioactively-labeled tissues and cells, and methods of applying nuclear emulsions. This publication serves as a detailed laboratory guide for researchers and workers to successfully conduct electron microscope techniques.
