Book The Use of Anonymous Characters in Greek Tragedy

Download or read book The Use of Anonymous Characters in Greek Tragedy written by Florence Yoon and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-07-25 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anonymous characters appear in almost every extant Greek Tragedy, yet they have long been overlooked in critical scholarship. This book argues that the creation and use of anonymous figures is an important tool in the transformation of traditional mythological heroes into unique dramatic characters. Through close reading of the passages in which nameless characters appear, this study demonstrates the significant impact of their speech, actions, and identity on the characterization of the particular named heroes to whom they are attached. Exploring the boundaries between anonymity and naming in mythico-historical drama, the book draws attention to an important but neglected aspect of the genre, suggesting a new perspective from which to read, perform, and appreciate Greek Tragedy.

This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetic Plural of Greek Tragedy, in the Light of Homeric Usage The subject here considered has naturally received limited attention in the Greek Grammars. But Sasse' has chosen to employ the term in reference to the pronoun "nos" as found in imperial edicts, in the utterances of those in authority. So too the expression is employed by Gerber, Volp, Draeger, Buttmann and others. There is certainly no uniformity in its use either in general works or commentaries.
